Chitragupta for "knowledge and justice"
📜 Who is Chitragupta?
Chitragupta is the divine accountant and record keeper of Lord Yamraj, the God of Death. He keeps a detailed record of every person’s good and bad deeds (karma) during their lifetime. After death, Yamraj refers to Chitragupta’s record to decide whether a soul will go to heaven or hell.
According to Hindu belief, Chitragupta was created by Lord Brahma from his own body to assist Yamraj in maintaining justice in the universe. That’s why his name means:
Chitra = picture or record
Gupta = hidden or secret
He symbolizes truth, justice, knowledge, and fairness.
👨👩👦👦 Children of Chitragupta
Chitragupta had twelve sons, and their descendants are known as the 12 branches of the Kayastha community:
Srivastava
Suryadhwaj
Valmiki
Mathur
Gaur
Bhatnagar
Saxena
Karna
Ambashtha
Nigam
Kulshreshtha
Asthana
These 12 lineages are collectively known as Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, who honor Chitragupta as their ancestor and family deity.
🎆 Why is Chitragupta Puja Done After Diwali (on Bhai Dooj)?
After Diwali, on the day of Bhai Dooj, people perform Chitragupta Puja. On this day:
Sisters pray for the long life and happiness of their brothers.
Kayastha families worship Chitragupta and their writing tools (like pens, notebooks, or computers today).
This symbolizes respect for knowledge, truth, and righteousness — the same values Chitragupta stands for. People pray to him to help them do good deeds and live a just and honest life.
🕉️ Caste (Varna) of Chitragupta
Chitragupta and his descendants belong to the Kayastha community. They are said to have qualities of both Brahmins and Kshatriyas:
Like Brahmins, they are intelligent, well-educated, and engaged in writing and record keeping.
Like Kshatriyas, they believe in justice, responsibility, and protecting truth.
👉 Therefore, Kayasthas are known as the community of “knowledge and justice”, respected for both their intellect and sense of duty.
