“Mat?” You ask quietly when the call connects, voice shaking with emotion despite the efforts to hide the heartbreak raging through your veins.
“Hm, what’s wrong? Everything okay?” Mat’s familiar voice fills your ear, the sleep evident in every word he says. The feeling of comfort immediately envelops you, but the nickname he always calls you sends a stab of pain to your heart mixed with the guilt of calling so late.
“Did I wake you up? I’m sorry, know you have practice tomorrow and I shouldn’t have called you and-”
“Y/N, talk to me. What’s happening? Are you okay?” Mat interrupts with his concerned rambling and you can hear his sheets rustling as he sits up in bed undoubtedly ready to come to your rescue if needed. Despite the tears rolling down your cheeks and the hole in your chest, a small smile tugs at your lips. This is your best friend, you need him and know he will be there for you no matter what.
“I’m- uh, I had a date tonight.” You admit with a sniffle and the movement on Mat’s end stops. It’s not like the two of you never talked about your love lives over the course of your long friendship, but lately there’s been this weird feeling about gushing or complaining about dates of any kind. “He was supposed to be here hours ago, but I figured I’d wait and h-he never showed. He didn’t call or text or anything. Just stood me up, making me look like another hopeless idiot and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong anymore.” The sobs rattle your chest as a rush of chilly Manhattan air makes you shiver.
And through your heartbroken cries, the silence of Mat’s end was deafening, but his heart is shattering into a million pieces.
“Where are you? Just tell me the address, please.” Mat almost begs while scrambling around his room to throw clothes on. Millions of thoughts and emotions surface, but he feels the overwhelming sense of worry and anger the most. The nerve for someone to stand you up and hurt you like this is unbelievable and he knew the moment you called that he will do anything to fix this.
You stutter out the address between a few sniffles and anxious sentences, but Mat reassures you over and over that he’s glad you called him. He’d rather know you’re safe and with him, then have you silently suffering alone.
“Stay there. I’m coming to get you, okay? Ten minutes tops. Just hold tight, Y/N. I’ll see you soon.” Mat says softly, pausing in all his hasty rushing around to make sure he hears your response.
“Okay. Thank you, Mat, really.”
And with that, you both say goodbye before the call ends and Mat is sprinting out his apartment with only you on his mind.
Less than ten minutes later, like promised, Mat is climbing out of a cab in front of the nicely decorated Italian restaurant that you had given him the address for. His gaze is instantly searching for you, his anchor in a raging sea, when he finally spots you sitting defeated at one of the empty outdoor tables. Your jacket is wrapped tightly around you in an effort to stay warm in the cold fall night and Mat can’t help but admire how strikingly beautiful you look even now..
Oh, how he wishes he was yours.
“Y/N,” Mat almost whispers, but you hear his familiar voice over the noise of the city. Your sad eyes meet his and in a split second, you are rushing towards him. Without a moment of hesitation, Mat wraps his arms around your body while you rest your head on his chest and try to snuggle impossibly closer. A fresh round of sobs rattle through you and Mat’s lips are pressing long kisses to the top of your head.
“I’m so sorry. I just didn’t know what to do and needed you.” You start rambling, cheek squished against his chest and Mat has to hold back the words he so desperately wants to say. “I’m sick of going through this. At this point, I’m convinced it’s me and it’s so unfair how everyone else gets to be happy in love when I can barely find one guy to even give me the time of day.”
“Don’t say that. It’s the farthest thing from the truth. Any guy would be incredibly lucky to have you and I know that for a fact.” Mat murmurs, gently lifting your chin up so he can meet your gaze. He nuzzles his nose in your hair before planting one last kiss to your temple. “Let’s get you home, hm? You’re shivering.”
For a moment, you don’t say anything, only admire the boy who owns your whole heart without knowing. The entire city of New York, or at least half of it, loves their star hockey player, but you love him just like this. Just Mat. Not Mathew Barzal of the New York Islanders. But your Mathew Bazal who will sacrifice sleep to pick you up from a disaster of a night and do everything in his power to make you feel better.
“Can we go to your place? I don’t really want to be alone right now.” You ask quietly, trying to read the emotions flickering across his facial features. “But if not, that’s okay. I can go home.” Mat immediately shakes his head and hugs you in for another warm hug that feels like safety and home.
“Of course we can. Lucky of you, I just stocked up on coffee ice cream for you.” Mat laughs, the sweet sound filling your heart with pure happiness.
“You’re the best.” You smile up at him, the first time your lips have turned upwards all night and you can tell it makes Mat beam with pride. He made you happy and always will.
“I know.” Mat chuckles as you pull away from his embrace to fall into step with him. “Subway? I took a cab over because I didn’t want to waste time getting to you.” You nod in response, feeling a weight lifted off your shoulders from the exhausting emotional turmoil the night has put on you. Mat stays close to your side while talking about his earlier practice today in an effort to keep your mind from wandering.
And then, halfway through the five blocks to the nearest subway station, you feel Mat’s hand grazing past yours ever so often. Physical touch with him isn’t new. Since you met as children, the boy has been fond of expressing his emotions with hugs, kisses and small touches. But this feels different, more intimate somehow, and you can’t place why.
Just as you both step onto the platform to wait for the train’s arrival, you’re about to ask what he’s doing with the subtle touches, when he beats you to it.
“Can I hold your hand?”
The world seems to stop with the simple question. Your heart starts racing and your mind is wiped clean of all thoughts except the boy in front of you. A wild blush spreads across Mat’s cheeks as each second sets a new kind of anxiety in his thoughts. Should he not have asked and just went for it? Do you really not feel the same way?
But you reach over to gently intertwine your fingers with his and offer him a smile full of nothing but love. A small sigh of relief slips past Mat’s lips and he squeezes your hand ever so carefully. Without a single exchange of words, you can feel the sudden change between the two of you, the hidden feelings finally making an appearance after so long.
And when the train speeds through, your hair flying in all directions and Mat’s presence comforting in every single way, you know this is the beginning of something.
