It is vital to challenge non-consensual, pseudoscientific health advice within our vegan community because it is a form of ableism and is harming people like me. Disabled people are frequently forcibly given non-consensual health advice. The issue is especially prevalent in the vegan community where there is a deep-seated belief that eating plant-based can “cure” incurable diseases. Many people giving this advice may mean well. However, the reason non-consensual health advice is so prevalent is that when abled people see a disabled person, their first thought is either pity or that they need to fix us.
The issue is that disabled people are not broken and do not need to be fixed. We are existing in a world which is inaccessible to our needs. What we need more than anything is equal access. The vegan community would do well to not further alienate the disabled community. Disabled vegan voices need to be heard to make our vegan community more accessible. Veganism is a justice movement for non-human animals and any way we can make veganism more accessible is a win for the animals.
