X. ACCEPTING – “ you’re just stalling now. ” / either inej or nina for kaz @moonswove

░░░░░░ ☾ kaz looks away, out into the streets below, at the people – the pigeons – milling about without a care in the world. just you wait, he thinks, and he wants to bare his teeth in something resembling a smile. instead, he says to inej, “it’s called waiting. i would think you’d know the difference by now.” kaz taps one finger against the table serving as their lookout, before he turns to face her yet again. “or don’t tell me i made a mistake.”

░░░░░░ ☾ everyone says that kaz is merciless, his crew reckless, and his plans golden. none of these things are strictly true.

he shrugs, unwilling to give an answer. because what is there to say ? my hands are bound. i am always in over my head. driven by revenge, my only way is down. ( none of these things are strictly true, either. ) but nina looks at him now, her eyes wide and green. she looks tired. saints knows he is, too. this whole trip is just one special brand of desperation, now that he’s really had the room to think about it.

so he turns away. “you had better get to work, then.”

░░░░░░ ☾ “of course. fortune favours the rich and powerful.” there are times even now where she will have to wring decency out of him. mind you, it’s still a step up from having to pry it out of his cold, dead hands. “i’ll take the inspiration where i can find it.”

the small mistake, maybe, was letting inej in. it’s always been like this: if he lets people get too close, he’ll swallow them whole. with need or with selfishness or with something far more sinister, kaz has never wanted to find out. ( death, on the wind. ) but inej has always proved herself to be a good investment, and kaz doesn’t want to be the only one who’s not all in.

it’s a sure sign of madness, if you ask kaz.

“i’m sure your saints will appreciate the challenge, as they always do.” he taps her arm with his crow’s head cane. “don’t make me tell you to stay safe.”

but perhaps fortune favours the brave.
