Act 2
Koga walks into the local pub The Railgun and meets his private detective Giri Sakaguchi, who has been posing as a real estate agent to gather information about the residents of Decelis and everyone they associate with. Giri was seated in a corner of the pub. Koga immediately spied him and walked to Sakaguchi before the pub owner Sunoo could see him. Koga knew that if Sunoo saw him then all of Riverfield would know he was back in town whereas Mr. Wilkins wasn’t the type to reveal any information about anyone staying in the inn. “Sakaguchi this better be good.”
“Good to see you too K, but if you want to get down to business fine by me it’s your money,” said Sakaguchi as he pulled out a thick file folder.
Sakaguchi eyed his one note “The best I could learn, Mr. Yodai, is that Jini Park Hong hasn't left that hill in 18 years.”
Koga looked at him expectantly “Did you find out why?”
Sakaguchi pulled out some papers and handed them to Koga “Well, several stories are going around, uh, none of them make much sense. It'll all be in the report. I think she needs a keeper.”
Koga scanned through the report “Perhaps she's getting one.”
“Like who? You?”
Koga gave him a look of disgust “No. A guy...who doesn't know what he's getting into.”
You're sitting at the cafe’s dining counter as a young brunette woman in a white buttoned-up blouse, black pants, and a jean apron walks from the kitchen up to the counter with a sandwich on a plate. “Here’s your turkey melt and coffee.” she said.
“Yes thank you, I’m starved and freezing and I thought Chicago was cold,” you say. You proceeded to add sugar and creamer to your coffee as soon as the young woman set it down before you.
“You’re also a jerk.” she said while receiving a message and typing a lengthy reply and sending it.
“Excuse me!?”
“Jerk, J-E-R-K.”
“Gee thanks?” You take a bite out of sandwich and sipped your coffee.
“No problem, I’m Kazuha Nakamura and I’m the current last line in a stream of gossip, by the way how’s the sandwich.” noticed she was on her phone typing at speed you weren’t quite sure was humanly possible.
“It’s really good,” you admit after swallowing another bite, “but I still do get the whole jerk thing.”
Kazuha replied to the message and leaned both elbows on the table and said “It's like this. A chauffeur tells a desk clerk, who tells a housekeeper, who tells me that you're going to work up in Decelis. That makes you a jerk.
You couldn’t help but laugh "I'm sorry I still don't follow you."
“Listen, honey. The Park family is the biggest thing in this town. They own the biggest cannery, the biggest fishing fleet, and the biggest, darkest, gloomiest old house. And they're kooks, every one of 'em. I should know I work part-time as a maid up there.”
You scoffed “Oh come on, I don't believe that. Wait... you work there?”
Kazuha shrugged “Yeah part-time domestic assistant... Okay I'm a maid, but I prefer a domestic assistant. Move in there. But take a good look in that mirror right now. Because in two months, that gorgeous hair of yours will be one glorious shade of grey.” Kazuha placed her phone in her apron and went straight to the coffee pot.
“Well, you work there and your hair still looks brown and healthy,” You pointed out.
“See there is a big difference between us. You’re going to be living in the mansion and I stay at the Seaview Cottage with my stepbrother and aunt. You can’t go crazy among the ghosts when you don’t live with them.”
She offers you a free piece of pie. She walked over to get the pie while you look in the mirror behind the counter, touching your hair you began to think to when your friend Rachel questioned your departure earlier that morning. You told Rachel that accepting the job was something important and that he had to do it. Like on the train you start twisting the totem on your necklace. As your deep contemplation about the choices you've made since receiving that letter, you fail to notice Kazuha sending a few texts and take a picture of you sending it to whomever she was texting. Kazuha chuckles as she catches you drifting off.
“Maybe you do belong at Decelis.”
“Maybe I do,” you wondered out loud.
“Why don’t you stay overnight at the inn and make up your mind about the job in the morning.” Before you could say anything.
“Kazuha, that would defeat the purpose of me coming all the way here,” said a new voice from behind. You turn to see a tall handsome man in a fetching business suit. You feel a little underdressed around the newcomer, in just your trenchcoat, beige slacks, and a plain forest green polo shirt underneath.
“(M/N), I would like to introduce you to-” Kazuha began.
“I take it you’re (M/N) (L/N), the new tutor. I’m Sunghoon Park. The attorney in the family and for tonight your chauffeur,” Sunghoon said, with a warm and welcoming grin.
“Cuu… I mean Yes! Yes, I am (M/N) (L/N)… no wait I,” You managed to say trying your best to snap out of a daze you found yourself in. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr Park,” You reply while shaking Sunghoon’s hand and returning the smile, “how did you know I was here?”
“Mr Park is my grumpy cousin, please call me Sunghoon, and to answer your question Kazuha texted me that you were here at the inn.”
“You got here faster than I expected, were you racing your way here after I sent you that picture of our new friend here?” Kazuha teased. Sunghoon’s ear started to turn red as he was about to protest, luckily You asks Kazuha if she is serious about her warnings. “Nah, I was just giving you a hard time that’s all forget whatI said.” You don’t press you on it.
“We should go cousin Jini has been looking forward to meeting you. All of us have been looking forward to this,” said Sunghoon as he leads you out of the Riverfield Inn. Sunghoon swiftly took your luggage out of your other hand and gently placed it in the backseat then he opened the passenger side door for you and closed it behind him.
“Nervous?”
“Huh?”
“I noticed you started twisting that amulet on your necklace when you asked Kazuha if she was serious about warning you off from Decelis. When she told you no, you dropped it. Now you’re twisting it again.”
“Oh sorry, your the first person to call me out on that in a long time. I’ve done this almost my entire life when I was able to start wearing it. I think it grounds me.”
“Is the amulet important to you?”
“It’s called a totem and yeah it is.”
“Well no need to be nervous. I’ll be up there with you and my cousin Jini is really nice person. Yeah she maybe stern and sometimes rigid but trust me once she on your side she ‘s both your biggest cheerleader, supporter, and fighter.” Sunghoon said as he placed a hand on your knee and gave it squeeze. You felt your cheeks heat up from the contact.
“Right thanks. Sunghoon, do you know a Koga Yudai?”
“Can’t say I do. Is he a friend of yours..”
“Well no, I met him getting off the train he offered to get me a taxi to Decelis and said he knows your family, well enough to warn me not to go to the mansion.”
“Well to tell you the truth, I’ve only been here in Riverfield for a couple years now before I mainly lived in South Korea and San Fransico. Up until two years ago I had never set foot here, so I’m sure there are plenty of people that I don’t know about that have a history with my family pleasant or otherwise. Did anything he say bother you in anyway.”
“No. No more than what Kazuha said. I like to give everything and everyone the benefit of the doubt before I make any judgements.”
“That’s a good policy to live by, but what does your instincts tell you?”
“My instincts tell me there more to every story and that I should put my trust in you.”
“Good instincts.” Sunghoon couldn’t help but to beam from ear to ear. Alistair had to hold back smirk. He had no clue where that boldness came from.
The drive to Decelis went smoothly after that with the two of you making light small talk which turned into full-blown conversations about their favorite reality show and in no time you had arrived at Decelis. Sunghoon had once again opened the passenger door and helped you out of the car. You were positive that your cheeks were burning and wouldn’t be shocked if they started steaming from how flushed they felt. As Sunghoon went to fetch your luggage the new tutor knocked on the door.
