Well, in canon TGAA, the animal mascots are little plushies Iris sewed, and who contain mechanics for both long-distance radio (extremely impressive given the lack of towers) and show a frankly magical understanding of local physics and surroundings.

Which is to say they can correctly deduce where someone's ear is and pull on it until answered. Robotics today can barely do that, because randomness and relying on visual input is nightmarish for robots. You know how bad visual recognition is with modern software, see the common example of "AI was trained to look for cancer, ends up only finding cancer in pictures with rulers in them because the only cancerous petri dishes in the training data all had rulers to show the size of the masses" and whatnot.

So for them to have both spatial awareness, visual input, and being able to act upon that visual input correctly (while being pocket-sized!) means that either a) Iris is just a straight up wizard or b) they're reasonably sentient. I figure the canon explanation is the same as Sholmes' holographs which is to say they didn't think that hard about it, but you know.

Sailor Kaz and his two cats, Mask and Nyazu, are a subsystem. They are technically three separate people, but they're also not: they're so telepathically entwined that they're both three distinct personalities, but also the same person. What you do to one, you do to all three, but what one does to you is not necessarily what all three are doing to you, makes sense?

For example, we got Lunar because Mask decided we needed another cat, and went messing with our headspace's central server room until it got him another cat. Nyazu was aware of it, Sailor Kaz was not - he was aware Mask was off exploring, but Mask had pulled the servers so far out of context that Sailor Kaz didn't recognize them from Mask's perspective.

Al and E-Ming's subsystem works a bit differently, but we're still trying to figure out how exactly it works. All we know is that they definitely don't work the same way Sailor Kaz and the cats do. I could probably go into the server room and go figure it out, but that is putting the body out of commission for a full day if not longer, so we're not doing that unless we have to.
