Summary:
Hans and John argue plans as Henry and Samuel pass the time.
Preview of the fic:
Of all the reasons for the four to be brought together after Kuttenberg, none save for perhaps Liechtenstein, expected it to be for a cause as difficult as saving King Wenceslas himself. Here they be, and a plan slowly forming.
“If we can find someone amongst the staff who is sympathetic, they could sneak Henry and Samuel in amongst the rest.”
“I’m sure whoever is in charge will notice two unknown men suddenly showing up and working as if they’ve never served a day in their lives before.”
Sunlight filters in through a hole in the ceiling. Samuel and Henry had climbed up there and did their best to cover it, but neither brother are carpenters and smaller holes still allowed nature to slip in. On the second floor they all had to move their bedrolls away from the offending space. This temporary camp of theirs was cramped, dirty, and barely better than sleeping outside.
Henry and Samuel didn’t seem to mind.
“Samuel is a sharp study, and we both know Henry has succeeded in more dubious deceptions.”
Hans wasn’t sure why he was even arguing this point. The brothers had agreed to the plan early on. There’s something in the way that Henry had been just as fast in trusting John as his brother was that annoys Hans. Yes Liechtenstein has helped them before, but had that truly been enough to earn his man’s confidence? Was this a matter of Henry’s great judge of character, or him having been won over too easily again?
“If we rush this then the risk is greater.” Hans points out. “They should spend some time there. Getting to know people, growing familiar with the grounds, and such.”
John shakes his head. “That raises the risk.”
Well if he were to concede on any point, “Not immediately. If they can sell the act then it will be the safer option. Don’t forget Henry is quite good at gleaming information from unsuspecting sources.”
“So is Samuel.”
“Yes but Henry doesn’t have to resort to intimidation to do so.”
The polite facade starts to crack.
“Samuel has never had a loose end ruin his plans.” John’s words were growing less round about. So does Hans’.
“Perhaps he’s too hot-headed to show mercy.” Hans turns his whole body as he emphasizes. “Not exactly a virtue when you think about it.”
“Perhaps not, but a necessary quality to keep our allies alive.”
The glares thrown from one noble at the other were plain as day for all to see. If there were any other souls around to see it. This is a game Hans only ever enjoyed when it was tilted in his favor. Growing up he had often been on the losing side of arguing in such a noble manner. Swords were easier to grasp than implied meanings, but here he could not bring himself to stand down. Not even when his opponent is someone so adept in this manner of combat.
Henry’s honor is on the line.
Moving fast, still competing at their cores, the nobles turn to call their bodyguards into the fray.
Samuel was adjusting the knife in Henry’s hand. He shifts his brother’s thumb to rest right in the middle of the hilt. “Like that, now throw.”
Henry obeys. The knife spins about a meter in the air. It’s a simple toss, but even so the knife starts to twist sideways. Henry’s hand darts up. Large fingers wrap around the hilt as his thumb catches on the sharp side of the blade. He pulls back, bringing the blade to his lips with his thumb. “Kurva!”
Samuel holds out a hand. Henry drops the knife. Bleeding thumb now placed safely between his lips.
“Reach out with just two fingers.” Samuel instructs. He throws the knife up the same way Henry had. Swiftly, his thumb and pointer finger pinch the hilt, plucking the knife out of the air. “Like so.”
Henry nods, watching with clear interest. Samuel tosses the knife a couple more times. It soars above his hand, spins once, and lands back in his palm hilt-first. “Once you’re used to the knife’s weight, it becomes easier to use it in your favor.”
