aejin knows that his sister has big dreams, skies dotted by fluorescent lights accommodated by bright amber. he knows his sister is resilient and diligent, though, it doesn’t stop him from worrying about her wellbeing. he feels as though she had been overworking herself, coming home at times too late and at hours too early at dawn to fathom a new day. guilt dripping off of his digits as he messages her reminders to eat properly, always ensuring that she had the required rest for her night shifts after tutoring some of the children in the neighbourhood. only taking over the ones that clashed with her schedule, and hoping that she wouldn’t burn out from all the hard work.

their father, hardly present as he digs away at work at their local bakery. he knows his sister doesn’t like the way their father thinks, the way he speaks nor the way he rigorously enforces unrealistic expectations and standards onto them. aejin always lets the corner of his lips tug upwardly whenever their father proceeds with his speech, one that aejin has heard many times only to nod and smile. their father gave them everything, the clothes on their backs and the roof over their heads when their mother passed, but never the time to close the gap between them that continually grew as that too, grew older. 

and as he turns to his sister, gaze setting on her own, it’s been a while since their family of three were all present for dinner. the table felt fuller, plates no longer strewn in the sink at inconsistent times, until their father decided to wash them, reluctantly at that. aejin can tell that their father was quite pleased with their full dinner table, the smile that he tries hard to hide peeks through the tough facade. aejin can’t help but let his own lips perk into a subtle smile, “it’s good to have for you dinner, aeri.” their father nods, agreeing. “how was school and work?” although, they attended the same school, they rarely ever got to see each other during those hours, the differing disciplines does well to separate them.

the panic that taesoo experiences everytime the crescent boys manage to get themselves into hot water, is immeasurable. especially this time around, when miles, the maknae no less, decides to get himself into a scandal with a fellow member of the maknae line. taesoo could feel the greys in his strands becoming more and more prominent by the day. feeling the stress starting to eat at his bones, his flesh becoming a mere shield to the criticism that the boys receive, feeling like the responsibility sat on his shoulders to ensure that each member would come out of it alive and unharmed. 

the words coming from the ceo were not gentle reminders, they were stern hushes that masked the internal yelling taesoo sensed in the older man’s voice. tone too low to be anything more than a light warning, as he would say. he feels his shoulders tense up as he opens the door to the dorms, allowing for the maknae to enter, a frown already squirming across his features as he closes the door behind them. the car ride had been a quiet one, no words were exchanged aside from the frequent glances he would give to miles on occasion, just to check that he was still alive and breathing in his seat. 

taesoo clears his voice, fingers coming to comb through his strands, “miles.” tone gentle, not wanting to come off as confrontational, he has been with the boys long enough to know their temperament. “tell me what happened. i can’t help you if you don’t talk to me.” he’s trying to be encouraging, trying to be helpful as his features soften, attempting to convince the other, “i trust you and kiha, but i can’t help you unless you tell me what happened.”

“you can’t just do that to her, she’s our mother!” disbelief evident in her voice, raising almost to a scream as she settles herself down, takes a deep breath and avoids eye contact with her brother. despite their mother only being her step mother, mirabelle was always thankful for the roof that was given over her head. always thankful for the bed she was given at the end of the day. her arms come to cross in front of her, not having been able to comprehend her brother’s actions. “i can’t believe you have the nerve to do what you did...” she mutters under her voice, her brother had made the decision to send their mother into a care home, not only that, but to have be placed in the cheapest room by the dumpsters. 

“marcellus.” she speaks, this time attempting to be more firm, “marcellus, you can’t do this. what if the media catches this? what if someone in the care home leaks this information? what then? what then, marcellus?” her voice only raising as she speaks, frustration evident this time around. “i understand your dislike towards her, but this... this is... this uncalled for!” she strikes back again. she understands how her brother feels towards their mother. disdain on mirabelle’s own end, with her mother never having treated her right, always slamming her for things she could not control. 

their mother, constantly reminding them that happiness was something they could not possess, not in this lifetime with her at least. a morbid sentiment that always drew them together. their mother’s own unhappiness projected onto her children, the yoon kid’s were left to suffer alone in silence. “please, rethink this marcellus.”

cigarette dangling from his digits, taking it to his lips, knowing full well his career was not well suited for these vices. a soon to be addiction that he feels ravaging his system, lowering his hand as he drops it to the ground, foot pressing atop the withered flame. the unfamiliar scent of the night’s breeze rustles at his surroundings, clearing it of the intoxicating smoke that had lingered moments earlier. beginning the feel the ache in his shoulder as he takes a moment to roll it forward, feeling the tension ease slightly as he catches a glimpse of a familiar silhouette walking through the clear elevator doors. an immediate smirk is met at his lips, turning to face the older male, one he had grown to know as his brother’s boyfriend. 

“i think you found the wrong kang.” his smirk only growing, a teasing one. foot moving to push the flatted cigarette beneath his foot to the side, hands tucked away in his pockets. “an easy mistake.” 

the rooftop was gradually becoming an attraction, as more and more drunken individuals shove through the staircase, not many having utilised the elevator, to khai’s surprise. mostly couples having ran up, tail end of their dresses in hand as their night’s play thing clings closely behind. his gaze moves to meet with insu’s, “don’t tell me you’re here alone?” brows raising, eyes widening slightly in feigned shock, “if that’s the case, to what do i owe the pleasure?”

lee insu. an enigma in the eyes of khai. a male he once looked up to, strived to be, found admirable in all the right ways. the strong brow, hardened gaze and defined jawline, features his mother would praise and his brother would fall victim to, despite his discretion. khai was a shadow to insu back when those ideals where seemed so real, and so set in stone. when the admiration was fresh and a stubborn kind of worship painting his gaze in rose coloured glasses. and then, it all broke apart when the older decided to let his image fade, to let it rot with the rest of all the good things. insu was meant to be the image of ruthlessness, the image of mercilessness, the image of unrepentant words and raised fists. such a disappointment.
