I recently photographed Reagan May and her crew as they took the Super Late Model first place at Ona Speedway’s River City Ford 200. It was a great experience all together that ultimately opened my eyes to photographing a sport that I had otherwise overlooked. Reagan and her family operated pit crew are very passionate about the sport and will surely continue dominating race tracks across the country throughout this season and many more to come.
Reagan is one of seven drivers in the Kulwicki Driver Development Program. The KDDP was established last year by family members of 1992 NASCAR Champion Alan Kulwicki as a means to offer assistance to young drivers while keeping the late champion’s legacy and memory alive. Reagan and the other six drivers are competing for the inaugural “Kulwicki Cup” during this 2015 season, a winner will be announced in November and awarded a trophy and a grand prize over $50,000. Reagan was the 2014 TUNDRA Series Rookie of the Year, winning three super late model features last season, and finishing fifth in TUNDRA Series points.
Ona Speedway, a 7/16ths-mile oval is located just outside of Huntington, West Virginia. In 1963-64 and 1970-71, Ona hosted the NASCAR Grand National series, with Richard Petty winning three of the four races. Since 1971 the track has been through management changes and closures, but reopened last year under new ownership.
