I've been on the internet for a long time and I noticed that a lot of white saviors who label themselves as "allies" end up being just as racist as their rightwing counterpart. Not a whole lot but still too many imo. Dobson sounds like that type to brag about how he supports BLM but will talk shit about Asian or Hispanic people. Were there instances where Dobson outed himself as a racist?

I’ve seen people make that argument regarding how he depicted his former college roommate.

I remember seeing a comic Dobson did where the dialogue was basically "Hey Dobson, you remember that guy you made fun of in college? Well now he works for Disney!" and the last panel was Dobson sucking his thumb and crying. I saw a few years ago and I can't find it again.

Is it true that Dobson's friend used to work for the animated short film called "One Small Step" (or something like that)?

That would be Andrew Chesworth. I don’t believe he was friends with Dobson, but graduated from the same college Dobson did a year or so later. Dobson has repeatedly blamed his college for not properly preparing him for an animation job, and yet people Chesworth and Dobson’s college roommate both went on to have successful careers.

They also both worked for Disney, ironically enough.

Do you feel that Dobson's comic about Jiang have racist undertones? The whole "essentric Asian smart guy" trope feels really sus.

I don’t think it was an intentional thing. It was just an unfortunate side effect of trying to play up his roommates eccentricities for comedy mixed with his art style at the time being “ripoff-Rumiko Takahashi”.

Most of Dobson’s more racist or sexist comments and outlooks can be chalked up to him essentially thinking “ugh, stupid ignorant dudebros like this thing, so it’s probably the worst thing ever! I need to shit on it as much as possible, that’ll piss them off. Heheh.”

I always got the sense with that post that Dobson so badly wanted to hate and insult Ke Jiang, and hopefully turn his 'followers' (Of which Dobson always assumed he had loads of) against Jiang. But even he had enough self awareness to know that would look horrible, even for him, so he settled for moping about it.

I did come across like he wanted to hate on the guy just for getting a job at Disney, didn’t it? Implying the guy didn’t try or work hard to get where he was, when even in the comics Dobson drew of him, he’d be working on random things and investing time into it. Meanwhile, Dobson wants to complain how he’s having to struggle so hard, outright starring how he keeps taking shortcuts in his art yet somehow not grasping the exact problem with that.

It just pisses me off how Dobson says how his roommate Ke Jiang got to where he is without trying. NO, quite the opposite! He got to where he was BECAUSE he tried new mediums, challenged himself, and broadened his horizons! All Dobson has done is barely put in the effort to not have his art style be equated to anime, yet he believes because he puts in the bare minimum he should be awarded with, according to his DA journals, and executive producer position at Disney? This man’s disconnected from reality so much it hurts me-

Dobson tends to have a very childish mindset of “I wanted it more, so I should be given it with no effort on my part.”

Any guesses to who was his roommate in college that got into Disney and not him? I always wondered who they were and are aware of dobson’s antics.
