Spent the day trudging through two partition images in the hopes of finding a fragment of that one project I had in SVG+JavaScript. Sadly, no luck. If anything it's another reminder that if you sink your time into any major project.

Ok. Got too immersed in trying to fix gzdoom that I got to multitasking between terminal windows. I got a window mixed up and ended up nuking my home directory with a "rm -r *" that fortunately did not kill the directories hidden by a dot.

In this folder were my drawings, my screwing arounds in Blender, and some fortunately not recently modified writing.

First off ext4 is a damn good filesystem, it keeps things until the data gets overwritten but not all the things. I have about a half million files to sift through in order to find anything that didn't get caught as a non plain text file.

First off, tool to keep at ready is photorec, it's available on Linux as part of the "testdisk" package.

It runs from the terminal, don't expect an interface that likes the mouse. You point it at the partition you just wiped files from then you set the destination.

CRITICAL: Do -NOT- set the recovery destination to the same partition you're recovering from.

The important files I'm going to highlight in this post are for Krita and myPaint users: If this tool cannot recover the full 'kra' extension it will be a zip archive. The same applies to myPaint's 'ora' files, they are glorified zip files. Assuming you recover files be prepared to sift through the archives and make sure you're viewing your recent version and not the automatic backups enabled by default.

Just keep backups, I should've made a paranoia backup before I upgraded from Fedora 36 to 38, but I didn't. At least I found the more recent drawings, just need to rename them and confirm the shading. Now to see about figuring out which of these blend files is the most recent version.

If the comics seem like they’ve hit a bit of a slowdown that’s ‘cause they sure did. Moving vaguely chronologically, I reached a segment of strips that were lost in a dead hard drive years ago, Faced with either skipping those comics entirely or putting in the effort of redrawing it all, I chose to basically trace my tiny image files and redraw them in a larger format. I don’t have the life in me to do this with all of them, but yeah, I’ll do it for some. The one with Hawko was a lifesaver ‘cause two of the panels are in complete darkness and behind a crappy video feed respectively. I could resize those straight up without feeling awful about it.

Tumblr: all of this has happened before, all of this will happen again

So Tumblr has begun policing adult content bots. I’m seeing a lot of posts about roleplay accounts, fanfic pages, etc, being removed from the site. So far, it appears this is the result of inaccurate scripts, rather than direct intervention, but it’s still a bad sign.

Back in the early 00s, this happened on a more manual level with former Schelling site Livejournal. The reaction to this was the spinning up of still-operating Dreamwidth, which is a code fork of old school Livejournal with some pretty nice features glommed on.

Dreamwidth being a code fork made it possible to do direct imports of Livejournal content into it. I’m sure there’s various scraping tools out there for Tumblr to Dreamwidth, but I’m somehow doubtful it’s as smooth a transfer as it was from like to like.

What I would recommend, and what I’ll probably do, in order to avoid loss of content, is set up crossposting to Tumblr from Dreamwidth, as it allows for such things. Details are here.
