As the founder warden of Tsavo East, he and his team were responsible for protecting this vast wilderness area after the government set it aside as a national park. After David’s passing in 1977, the Sheldrick family — through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and in partnership with the KWS — have continued his legacy, conducting daily foot and aerial patrols to protect Tsavo’s wild inhabitants. Ivory poaching, increased incidents of human-wildlife conflict (the result of burgeoning human populations), and climate change have taken their toll on the Tsavo ecosystem and the animals who call it home. While we no longer see herds of this magnitude, our field teams still come across groups of well over 100 elephants during their regular patrols. We’re working hard for these wild populations: Our 12 De-Snaring Teams, Canine Unit, five fixed wing aircraft, two helicopters, and Mobile Veterinary Units work in direct partnership with the KWS to protect Tsavo’s wildlife. Meanwhile, through our Saving Habitats initiatives, we are securing crucial wildlife boundaries and providing watering points as across the ecosystem. This work, which saves the lives of wild animals every day, is only made possible by donations.
