In my never ending research on HP Lovecraft, I came across this letter, which is dated two days before HP passed. It’s from a friend/physician, addressed to RH Barlow, a very close friend of Lovecraft’s. It’s one of the most beautiful and saddest letters I’ve ever read. I only posted a portion of it and my transcription here, enjoy. “3 - 13 - 37 My Dear Barlow: - The mighty sage has been removed to the Jane Brown Hospital several days ago as his condition is steadily sinking. He has developed a severe kidney condition and his blood nitrogen has risen to 119 (the normal is between 15 & 35). My wife saw him to-day, and his private physician holds no hopes for him. He is too weak to do much, though his mind was still clear - and he spoke to my wife very beautifully. It makes me feel so depressed to see such a brilliant mind laid low. - - - He remains in constant agony and nothing but morphine will soothe his pain. Before being removed to the hospital he had not slept for nearly 2 weeks, along with his anemia he is quite run down. I dislike writing such a pessimistic epistle - but he is in a sorry plight. I will let you know about further developments. Best wishes & kindest regards - Harry” #lovecraft #hplovecraft #lovecraftpi #letterwriting #letters #1937 #keepitdark https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu9wF7qlvOn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=k8uwtz0a3ocw
