Hi! You responded to a post about unusual special interests and wanted someone to ask about wooden ventriloquist puppets.
I think that sounds awesome?? Please tell me about them
1: when did ventriloquism become popular/what is it’s origin?
2: why are wooden ones specifically your favorite?
3: who’s your favorite puppet?
4: got any fun facts?
EHEHEHHEEHEHHEHEHE >:)
Well!!
Ventriloquism has been around for QUITE some time!
In fact, it was originally a spiritual thing along ancient Greeks and Romans, where ventriloquists would actually speak for and interpret what your stomach had to say!
The kind of ventriloquism you see today is believed to have began in 18th century England. By the late 18th century it had become fairly established as a form of entertainment. At that point, there was also another popular form of ventriloquism where people would make their voice sound like it was coming someplace else, called distant ventriloquism. People had also started to use dolls and puppets for this practice. Fred Russel was one of the first to popularize the ventriloquist puppet concept.
When TV and the radio became a thing Edgar Burgen hosted a radio show which created a major rise in popularity for the concept.
Wooden ones are particularly my favorite because of the way they look and the potentials for articulation.
A lot of my favorite puppets are fictional, funnily enough, and could not be recreated entirely or used properly in real life. Nick Nack and Mortimer Handee from Hello Puppets come to mind. In real life? Howdy Doody holds a special place in my heart.
I may add some fun facts when it is not 3:30 AM ^^’
