In moments of vulnerability like this, it was easy to forget that Sebastian wasn't merely human. But those eyes, usually so brilliantly golden, now held a different gleam, and the fangs that had slipped into view made Adolin understand what he'd failed to grasp before.
Vanth kept trying to shield him - or perhaps trying to talk some sense into the other man - but all Adolin could think about was what it would mean if he actually walked away.
Vanth cared about Sebastian. So, so much. The three of them knew he would stop at nothing to give his husband whatever he needed, even though, right now, Vanth should be resting just as much as Sebastian.
I can do it. Suddenly, Vanth's words made perfect sense to Adolin.
To recover from serious injuries, food and rest were essential. But for Sebastian, food meant something very, very different.
"Vanth, you can't" - Adolin says at last.
Vanth had already explained what they did. How… he offered himself so Sebastian could feed. And as much as Adolin hated the thought, he couldn't be enough of a hypocrite to deny that Sebastian needed to eat - especially in a situation like this.
But Vanth was injured too. Vanth was exhausted too, no matter how hard he tried to hide it.
Sebastian's request still hung in the air, echoed by Vanth's own plea.
Even so, Adolin hesitated, looking away from Vanth because it was impossible to meet his eyes right now.
"You can use me" - he says at last, directing the words to Sebastian rather than Vanth. "If I leave now, Vanth will…" - he swallows, his gaze dropping for a moment. "He's weak, Sebastian. But he's too storming stubborn to admit it or deny you anything, so…"
His stomach tightens. Maybe he was being one of the Ten Fools, but he couldn't let Vanth do it. Not when he was hurt too.
