Before Satoshi’s birth, Rio hadn’t exactly cared for much. After all, she felt apathy towards all artworks and all kinds of matters. Now, the woman held him in her arms as though he was a precious jewel. She took the boy everywhere with her, something that Elm Root had noticed. “You really care for that child, don’t you?” The artwork spoke, noticing that the artist before him had a mask of nonchalance on again. “What makes you think so?” She answered with a question. “You’re keeping him fairly close.” Or was it perhaps out of some maternal instinct of sorts?

Finally caught myself a breather to finish up this lovely thing, so I’m so sorry it came so late.

I wrote about Shimada Kai and Akari Kawamoto from Sangatsu no Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion) because thinking about them makes me want to cry. Although tbh anything about Sangatsu no Lion makes me want to cry lol. 

(And I think I listed all my fandoms under the other thing I reblogged for reference!)

Akari, blinded by the strongsunlight pouring into the room, blinked herself awake. She sat up, coming to asher sight adjusted, and she saw Shimada hunched over a low table. He noticedher stir from his peripheral vision and, tearing himself away from the woodenpieces in front of him, he gave her a soft smile.

“You fainted…straight into myarms. You know, if you wanted my attention, you didn’t have to go to suchextremes. “

It came out as a light-heartedjoke. His jesting caught her by surprise, but she too eventually had on agentle smile that mirrored his.

“Shouldn’t those be my lines?”

He laughed, dulcet and airy,before returning to his shogi board. “They should.”

The summer sounds of Tokyo filledthe silence that settled between them. Akari looked around, noting thebookshelves lining the walls before her eyes traveled to a lone cactus sittingby the opened window. It looked healthy, sporting green skin underneath itsspines.

“…are you alright?” Shimada asked,still facing the shogi board. He moved a piece—click—before resting his head in his hand.

“Um, yes!” Akari squeaked back.“It must’ve been the summer heat.”

Shimada sighed. “Summer heat ornot, you should be taking better care of yourself instead of fainting atpeople’s doorsteps. Wouldn’t want a young woman like you to end up like me soquickly.”

“Of course.”

Shimada glanced at her, as ifsensing the insincerity in her response, but he said nothing before turningback around. She stared at his back, eyes focused on the shoulder bladesjutting through the thin fabric of his shirt, the strands of hair that curledaround the nape of his neck.

“You should head back as soon asyou feel ready to. I’m sure everyone’s worried about you.”

“Yes. Thank you for looking afterme.”

“It’s the least I could do.”

She got up from the futon,carefully folding everything up until it sat in a neat pile. Akari headed overto the kitchenette to grab a glass of water, and she couldn’t help but smilewhen she saw the containers filled with the food she had brought over, neatlystacked in the corner of his fridge.

“Let me know if you want morefood,” she said, pitcher in hand, as she closed the fridge door.

“I couldn’t impose like that—oh,could you pour me a glass, too?”

Water in hand, she joined Shimadaat the low table, setting his cup in front of the shogi board while she sethers down right in front of her.

“Thank you.”

“Mhm.”

From her vantage point, hereminded her of Rei whenever she watched the younger man toil in front of ashogi board: eyebrows furrowed and eyes focused as he analyzed the board.Despite the size of the wooden pieces, each movement they made felt heavy anddeliberate.

But that was where thesimilarities ended. Shimada’s long, spindly fingers framed the wooden piecesdifferently than Rei’s. His elongated face, with his cheeks jutting out soprominently, made the older man look emaciated compared to the healthyroundness of Rei’s. Crow’s feet and puffy bags of fatigue clung to Shimada’seyes, and Akari couldn’t help but pity the man who’d sacrificed so much of hisvitality in pursuit of his dream.

“Something on my face?”

“Oh, no. It’s just—”

“I look like an old man?”

“No!” Akari vehemently protested,and Shimada couldn’t help but guffaw at her reddening face. “Please don’t putwords into my mouth!”

He smirked. “I did the same thingto Rei once. Never thought I’d see that kid lose his composure so quickly.”Shimada moved yet another piece—clack—beforeresting his head once again in his hand. “You know, it’s weird having people over.I moved from the country, only knowing people at the shogi club, and we weren’texactly on ‘visiting’ terms, yanno.”

After some silent deliberation,he moved a shogi piece—click—with ease,as if he weren’t starting what sounded like an emotional soliloquy.

“But then I met Bou, created thestudy group, and now people are over every week as if my house is becoming somesort of communal area.” He laughed. “Even when it’s not time for our study group,the kids always find a reason to come by. And even Hayashida’s started comingby, too.”

“I’m sure they all enjoy your company;there’s nothing wrong with that.”

“Me an’ Hayashida’s all fine, butthe kids have better things to do than hang out with an old man like me.”

“I’m sure they’re more than happyto spend time with someone they care about doing something they love.”

“Mmm…”

Shimada had fallen back intosilence, and Akari sipped at her water until she finished it. She got up,tip-toing to the sink and washing her glass before heading to his front door,careful not to break Shimada’s concentration. When she got there, she slippedon her shoes before taking one last look at Shimada.

He was staring straight at her.

“I know you’re busy an’ all, andthat Rei or Bou’ll probably be more than happy to teach you, but you’re morethan welcome to drop by if you want to learn how to play shogi.”

It seemed like such a simplerequest that one wouldn’t think too much about, absent-mindedly accepting incourtesy before forgetting moments later. But they both understood the weightbehind his words, and a smile bloomed on Akari’s face.

“Just let me know what you’d likeme to bring when I come over.”

“Surprise me.”

Can you imagine a little Mothers Day story about Daiki preparing a celebration for Emiko (with baby!Daisuke of course~)? Give us some serotonin...!

The moment she walked through the door, her newborn in hand, there’s the sound of party poppers going off. The sound startles Kosuke, who nearly slips on the steps. “Congratulations” Her father, Daiki happily greets her. As the three head inside, there’s a strawberry shortcake in the center of the table, Inspector Saehara on one side as well as the normal Sekimoto-san and his wife who also greet her just as happily. This certainly was the cast of characters. “It’s great to see you again as well as finally get to meet Daisuke.” The inspector said with a grin. “He’ll probably fit right in with Takeshi and that Masahiro of yours, right Sekimoto?” He placed an arm over said man’s shoulder who laughed along. “Right, I’m sure they’ll be getting along quickly.” Though whose to say whether that may be true but overall, she’s grateful that they all came to congratulate her.

“Mom, look what we got!” Tou called out, Maki trailing right behind him. Tou had always been much more expressive out of the two twins, taking after probably herself if she had to say. Maki on the other hand, tended to be less so and only passionate towards other matters, much like the man she’d married. In Tou’s hand seemed to be a set of matching fluffy animal key chains in the shape of a bear. The two bears' appearance reminded her of the two boys, one with a cheerful demeanor and the other not so. “Happy Mother’s Day! Do you like it?” Tou asked with a grin. “We thought that they would keep you company when you’re shopping and all while we’re at school.” Maki explained, a rare smile on his face for once. For a moment, there is only silence. The two feel a set of hands reach up, ruffling their hair. “Thank you.”
