Chapter 1: "That Goddamn Barista"

A Kurama/OC fanfic featuring Kei from Lucky Child. For the "Keirama" fans. :P

SYNOPSIS:

Plagued by writer’s block and desperate for a fresh start, author Yukimura Kei stumbles upon a lovely coffee shop and designates it their new favorite writing haunt. The vibes are immaculate, the drinks delicious, and the clientèle quiet. Even most of the staff is great. The place is pretty much perfect. Or at least it would be if it weren’t for that goddamn barista judging Kei's coffee order every time they come in. Kurama loves his job as general manager of The Fox's Garden almost as much as he loves coffee itself. To him, coffee isn’t just a drink. Brewing the perfect cup is an art, and every day he comes to work grateful for the opportunity to spread his love of coffee to the world. His job is pretty much perfect. Or at least it would be if it weren’t for that goddamn writer with horrible taste taking up the back table every day. Life is too short for two things: bad coffee and bad conversation. Luckily for Kei and Kurama, the universal language of coffee can overcome any barrier… including the one between a coffee connoisseur and a writer with truly abysmal caffeine preferences. [Kurama/OC. I'm going through the RIOT CHILD materials I never imported into Scrivener and I just found 2,000 words of how Kurama and 2020!NQK could end up together if I wanted to explore that ship and WHY IS IT STEAMY, I DON'T REMEMBER WRITING THIS, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN

I've decided that what makes me a Keirama shipper 'til the end is that I truly adore the dynamic. He's a very old, very smart demon. She's accidentally in the know. She has no power over him, but what she's hiding in her brain is the most interesting thing in the world and also this is driving him batty. If this were a genre in romantic fiction I would devour it whole, leaving no title behind. Have you ever come across it out in the world?

I... I don't think I have??? Not this exact flavor, anyway. Romances between someone and "a character who knows too much" sounds like something you'd find in a stalker romance book, though without the supernatural part! XD I suspect this exact trope lends itself to self-insert fics by nature of the genre/subgenre. But if anyone has an example in mainstream fiction, I'm all ears.

(Oh. Isekai anime. Does this pop up in isekai anime? I feel like it pops up less than I'd suspect. The "isekai'd into a fictional world I'm familiar with" element isn't as popular as just getting sucked into a video game, but the villainess subgenre seems like it might have some romances close to what we're describing! There's an opportunity there, at least.)

I've read romances between people that hinge on one half of the relationship being a puzzle for the other person to solve, though. That's definitely a thing I've seen pop up a lot. "You are so interesting and strange, I can't seem to pull myself away and I find myself fascinated into loving you" feels familiar. (Thinking a little bit of Rose and the Doctor.) The tension of one person's scrutiny being so tightly fastened on the other, and that fascination deepening into something else, is absolutely delicious.

TBH, I can see why Keirama in the context of Lucky Child got popular. Granted, I didn't help matters by writing it the way that I did, but still. They have such a unique dynamic and Kurama is fascinating enough on his own. Having that fascination fixed on our narrator definitely makes me feel some kind of way...

New "Lucky Child" Content!

While I haven't written anything in the LC-verse recently, my friend saxophoneliz just published a short story about Kurama and Kei!

For those of you hankering for new "Keirama" goodness during my hiatus, I can't recommend this one-shot enough. It's incredibly sweet, showcasing the lovely emotional intimacy between NQKeiko and Kurama against the backdrop of a dance meetup.

i think i might be the only person who wants kei to not end up with anyone purely because i love kei and tom 😭😭

any time kei mentions tom or thinks of him, my heart just 💔 it's so sad pls

keirama is so cute but keitom (??🤣) wins my heart completely :')

D'awwww, that's very nice to hear!

You'll get to see more of Tom in the next arc, for what it's worth. Kei has a lot to think about in terms of love and relationships, and it's all more complicated that anyone (least of all Kei) quite realizes yet.

I'm hoping the ending I have planned will make everyone happy in their own ways, though. Can't wait to share it with you. <3

“Keirama Xmas” Status: 19k Words & Counting

Well I’m glad I decided to split the Keirama Christmas story into three parts, because Part 02 is 10,000 words long, bringing the story’s total word count up to 19k. And Part 03 isn’t even CLOSE to done yet. 😬

But I think you Keirama degenerates (said with all affection) are going to enjoy what lies in store in this one, because DAMN do I need a trip to the dentist after writing that sugar-sweet shipping. DAMN!

A VERY Long One-Shot or a Three-Part Story?

Next week I’ll be releasing both Lucky Child chapter 118 and the Keirama Christmas story I mentioned in my last update.

I completed LC 118 earlier today, and I have completely outlined + written all the dialogue for the Keirama Christmas story.

But, uh... the combined outline + dialogue for the Christmas fic is already at 9,500+ words.

Long story short (irony)... this fic is going to be MASSIVE once it’s complete. 

So here’s what I’m wondering. Would y’all rather read ONE MASSIVE ONE-SHOT on Christmas Eve, or would it be better if I broke this up into three smaller (but still pretty meaty) chunks? 

If the latter, I’d probably release one on December 23, one on Christmas Eve, and the final on Christmas Day just to space them out a little. 

I didn’t think this would be quite so long (story of my life) so my initial plan of releasing it all on one day might be a bit... overwhelming. Smaller, spaced out chunks could be easier to read.

Anyway. All thoughts appreciated, if you’ve got ‘em. And happy holidays!
