@tritonjackson commissioned a faux superhero cover for @darkmagyk of Percy and Annabeth in their superhero AU! With Riptide and the Superb Owl teaming up, how can they lose?
[Image ID: A superhero-type comic cover, featuring Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Annabeth is in the foreground, fists up and ready to punch. She has an orange shirt with a purple owl on it, an owl-like purple half-mask, and purple gloves. Percy, hovering in the midground, is wearing a green and blue outfit with a trident on his chest, a cape furling out behind him, and has his hands up controlling a swirl of water around him. In the background is a cityscape, with emphasis lines surrounding Percy and Annabeth.
The title reads: RIPTIDE & THE SUPERB OWL. The subtitles read: When a new villain attacks... will New Athens become a CITY OF THE DEAD?]
Padme Naberrie Amidala, patron Saint of Redemption and Diplomacy
So @mmeviardot and I have been talking about a canon-adjacent AU where Padme Amidala is basically turned into a religious figure by some pockets of people across the galaxy, and this is my interpretation of what an icon of her would look like.
The face: when people are made into larger-than-life figures, they’re simplified down, so I basically gave her a mask instead of a face to allude to that. Simplifications like this are also easier to mass-produce for artists (even though I know that the galaxy has, uh, advanced technology to deal with that), so it’s even more practical!
The halo: this is based on the hair piece that Padme wore during the “so this is how democracy falls” senate session, just expanded out to give her a Divine Halo.
The scales: I figure that she’d be associated with justice/diplomacy, so we have the scales (and the symmetry all over the piece that is only broken by her arms and the city below). The scales also balance the Twin Suns - her twin children who then go on to be such influential people in the galaxy.
The body: She’s pregnant with the Rebellion! Boom. And then her dress falls in straight lines from her belly, turning into an abstracted pillar-like form that connects her with the city below. She literally turns into a pillar of democracy, becoming as much a part of it as the architecture.
The city: this is inspired by late medieval statues and paintings of the Virgin Mary protecting sinners with her cloak. Padme’s cloak falls open and contains architecture inspired by Coruscant, which was the seat of the Senate (and then the Empire, whoops). She’s taken the city/representatives of democracy under her wing to protect them.
The other stuff: There’s a flowering vines pattern in the background because Padme would be associated with giving birth, AKA bringing forth new life. The golden outlines is inspired by medieval cloisonne artwork, where the linework is metal and then enamel fills in the spaces between the lines. The border is an abstracted pattern, inspired by all the medieval manuscript illustrations that I’ve seen randomly (most heavily inspired by pre-1000s Insular manuscripts, but going beyond that as well).
You blush a little, but forge on: "While I miss my family, I've come to enjoy life with the Date, and I would be honored to serve as long as you have need of me." You hold Masamune-sama's gaze, trying to communicate the sincerity of your words.
CG for the second intrigue chapter of [nights long by repute alone]! And also the first time I’ve drawn digitally in....... way too long. It was a fun way to get back to it!
for christmas 2019, I drew a scene for my mama in the style of Japanese 19th century woodblock prints! It’s meant to capture a typical day while she’s trying to work, and our four pets are trying to distract her.
