Just watched Weathering With You last night, and after having thought about it until now I can honestly and genuinely say it's one of the best movies I've seen. From visual to audio, characters and writing to continuity. I love this movie.

Without spoiling anything for those that haven't seen it, I'll simply say you're missing out on a really good story thats visually stunning and doesn't have the world fix itself for the characters. What I mean by that is that they all make mistakes, the mistakes have consequences, and the movie doesn't gloss over, or even ignore them for sake of a love story. The characters adapt to the world they change, rather than change the world to adapt to them. Which I find admirable amidst a sea of animes or even live action movies and shows that fall back on that trope.

The cameos from Your Name are nice, not in your face, and unimportant to the main plot. While I recommend you watch that first or alongside this, not knowing the world or characters won't be a detriment. The story doesn't fall back on them to carry it, or to be relevant, only using them as a way to show how they, and the world have grown since the events of Your Name.

And it should go without saying that this movie is gorgeous, both in it's music and it's visuals. But I'll say it anyway, I am absolutely unquestionably in love with this movies soundtrack, settings, and overall design.

There are a few plot threads that could've been trimmed or tied up, and it isn't a perfect movie, but I can overlook those things personally. And I'm choosing to in favor of holding this in a high regard. Treat yourself, and watch this movie.

If you disagree that's okay too! Just my opinion, after all. But as for my opinion, this rivals, if not beats Your Name for me.

Weathering With You is beautifully animated...

...but it is just an OK film.

A teenager named Hodaka runs away to Tokyo, which has been enduring nonstop rain. After acquiring a job and living with his boss, who previously saved him, he begins to write an article about the “Sunshine Girl”. He later saves a girl named Hina and finds out she is the aforementioned person who has a special ability to stop the rain and let the sunshine in.

The two, alongside her younger brother Nagasi, make some money off her ability for people who want sunshine for their events. However, Hina’s powers come at a price. She has to sacrifice herself or else the rain will never end. Additionally, when they are outed by the press, the police are on the lookout for all three of them.

The film is from director/writer Makoto Shinkai, who previously worked on Your Name, the most successful anime film of all time at the box office. This film even features cameos from the main leads of Your Name.

Like Your Name, the film is beautifully animated, with its most prominent element being water. Most of the film is set in the rain, with several shots showing downpours and rain drops hitting the ground. Each droplet is animated slightly different from the others and the backgrounds have somewhat of a blue filter. Even the tears are colored with a different hue of blue to differentiate them from the rain, which is especially obvious during the climax.

During the few outdoor sunny sequences, a bright color palette reminiscent of Wolf Children and Sword Art Online is on full display.

This film is unfortunately bogged down by several factors.

The pacing is inconsistent. The first act does a great job setting up the premise, with Hodaka realistically struggling to live in Tokyo and meeting Hina. The second act is where the film begins to fall apart, as it tries to focus not only on Hina and Hodoka but also Keisuke’s struggles with his daughter and Natsumi looking for a job. By the time the third act begins, the film forces itself through four possible endings. The first is Hina sacrificing herself, the second is Hodoka traveling through the gate to save her, the third is Tokyo sinking while he boringly narrates, and the fourth and final time being the prolonged epilogue.

As for the epilogue, it is reminiscent of Your Name by being set after a time skip. It surprisingly shows the consequences of Hodoka saving Hina, with Tokyo now partially submerged. Seeing the two reunite ended the film on a positive note, although some may be disappointed they never kissed.

Most of the film’s characters are fully developed. Keisuke struggles to see his daughter due to her asthma, Natsumi looks for work, and Hina struggles with both her power and being Nagasi’s guardian. Hodoka, on the other hand, is horribly bland. 

His justification for running away in the first place was underwhelming, only saying in the vaguest of terms he didn’t want to go back home. The film never bothers to expand upon his past, leaving him as a whiny Disney knockoff protagonist who just wants more from life. The only difference between him and someone like Ralph or Rapunzel are the cops getting involved.

Another major issue the film had was the music. The songs by RADWIMPS sound great and are enjoyable. Their placement within the film, on the other hand, was mixed. There are several moments where the songs work, but it was difficult to take the climax seriously when the vocals were louder than the dialogue. To put it in comparison, it would be like if Eminem was played over the final battle from Avengers: Endgame.

Weathering With You is an OK film. It has great animation, a good premise, and good supporting characters, but is bogged down by inconsistent pacing, badly placed music, and a bland protagonist. If you liked Your Name or are a fan of romantic fantasies, you might like this film. Otherwise, I can only recommend waiting to see this film either when it is available for rent or streaming.

The film is rated PG-13 and currently in theaters. Check your local theater’s showtimes carefully, as the film is being distributed in both Japanese (with subtitles) and English.
