duOUTLANDER (2018) 01 401 O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years

1767. Four months on from being shipwrecked and washed up on the beach at the town of Savannah, Colony of Georgia, Jamie, Claire, Fergus, Marsali, his nephew Young Ian Murray and 2 of Jamie's former prison "Mac Dubh" companions Lesley and Hayes, found themselves in Wilmington, Colony of North Carolina. Unfortunately, their arrival had not been uneventful. Gavin Hayes had been discovered with a woman by her husband; he had accidentally killed the husband in the ensuing fight and was now going to be hanged for it. Jamie was terribly distraught, he felt responsible for his men as always, and the English Crown Colonial court didn't see the death as an accident when committed by a former Scottish Highland convict. Angry at the injustice, Jamie bribed the guard to talk to Hayes, intending on freeing him at the gallows, but Hayes said no. Hayes had no regrets; all he asked from Jamie was a last dram of whisky (Jamie only had rum) and to look upon a friendly face at his end. It was the least Jamie could do for Gavin, who had followed him into both peril and hope. Lesley and Fergus took the news of Hayes' rescue refusal hard.

To see a friend hanged was heart AND soul wrenching. Jamie, Hayes' bosom friend Lesley who had cried out his angry grief at the hanging, and the rest of them felt Gavin needed a proper wake and burial. The local church had refused to receive a convicted felon without bribery, but Jamie would not be deterred from this last favour to Gavin, who had been mortally scared of spirits and wouldn't want to be buried in unconsecrated ground. Amongst the plans they were making to return to Scotland and to visit Jamie's aunt Jocasta MacKenzie Cameron at River Run, they sang a Scottish Gaelic lament for him.

You were raised in  Cill-Mhartainn in the area of Dun Domhull! You were born in the town in 1727!

Afterwards, Jamie, Claire, Young Ian, and Lesley prepared to smuggle Hayes' body to the churchyard for a clandestine burial.
