today i must report some good things and some bad things.
tank number 1 (tetras, shrimp, snail) has been scraped for algae, and ive removed as much hair algae as i can (the worst!! 😭) and did a 20 percent water change. they look way happier. only positives here
tank #2 (goldfish, pleco, snails) is healing from its fin rot. the medicine is healing them, and theyre playful as ever.
unfortunately, i think we lost the last goldfish in our patio pond this morning. my gf usually takes care of them personally, but recently shes been having a hard time, so i took over and fixed as much as i could. it was pretty heavily neglected, the wild grasses roots were taking up half the pond and had strangled more than a couple fish and shrimp! i trimmed those and took out some as they grow far too fast. i then did as many water changes as i could before my back started acting up, and i made my metamour carry the buckets back and forth.
this patio or porch pond was pretty much a huge experiment from the start. it’s one of those big black bins with the yellow lid removed, stocked with feeder goldfish, no filter, no heating, built from backyard shit. to be fair we had no money, and they did pretty well!! chicago winter is tough, though. Yesterday i noticed that they got that goldfish slime, i got them medicine and a proper heater, but it was too late. the last 3 passed this morning. i couldnt find any others.
i feel like i learned alot from them. today i am going to build a simple bucket filter- although now that they’ve all passed, perhaps our attention should shift towards preparing the bigger outdoor tank space we got. maybe a bigger and nicer home for the next fish will be better!!
heres some old photos. ill take new ones soon!
