THE HIEROPHANT

The Hierophant can be a bit stuffy of a card, since it is steeped in deep conservative values and traditional standards. This card is all about those who are mentors and teachers in society, and we who are called to listen and obey them. This can be someone who is a religious figurehead or someone who is simply leading a culture in an orthodox way towards conformity. This card indicates that it is time to follow the tried and true path, come together with those who are committed to the group cause and start following the rules that have been laid out before you.

::Who's Who On This Card::

1. Father Faustus Blackwood from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Father Blackwood is a bit of an oppressive figurehead in this series, an authority figure and High Priest of the Church of Night which makes him the embodiment of Satan's will on earth, which is kind of like the opposite of the Christian Pope. He is seen as someone very traditional, having restored some of the old customs which some modern witches had deemed a bit too barbaric.

2. The Watchers Council from Buffy - The Watchers Council on Buffy is the group devoted to training the new slayers by passing down the knowledge of the Council. They did not lend themselves to change easily, preferring to stick to their traditions and the established rules of their organization. When met with dissenting opinions, they were firmly on the side of honoring their tradition and ceremony because, as one of their figureheads once protested, "It's been that way from the beginning."

3. Yoda from Star Wars - Yoda was Luke's guide and mentor when it came to learning the old Jedi code and how to use the force that flows through all. He was the voice of wisdom in the dark universe, one who was able to teach younger Jedi how to follow the established rules, urging his disciples to commit to the old beliefs.  

4. Kekata from Pocahontas - Kekata is a Shaman and medicine man from Pocahontas' tribe. He was seen entertaining children with ancient folklore tales to teach and guide them, explaining the ways of the world to those who followed him and leading religious ceremonies for those within his tribe.  

5. Shepherd Book from Firefly - A preacher who tended to see those aboard his ship as his flock, Shepard Book was the voice of traditional values and ethics while traveling on Serenity. His wisdom and guidance was even sought after by Mal, who tended not to listen to anyone else. Book showed through his actions and wisdom how following a discipline and staying within conventional bounds could benefit oneself and those on your team.

6. The Pope - In the Rider-Waite deck, this card was depicted as a Pope, so this picture just seemed obvious. The Pope is the interpreter of God's will for the masses of Christian followers, displaying the adherence to a belief system, identity with a world view and the faith in a higher power that this card often points to when it comes up in a reading.
