Firefly Textpost Meme 149
I had a friend over and I made her watch episode one, and she liked it! It reminds her of cowboy bebop, and she really likes Book!
Yay!! I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop, but I have heard that comparison before!! I think my dad watched the live action, so I might ask him.
And Shepherd Book for the win!!
Firefly Textpost Meme 146
That moment in Objects in Space where Simon goes to kiss Kaylee before being interrupted by Book. A malsimon version of that has been rotating in my brain because the interruption of Book, specifically Book, feels very thematically relevant to malsimon in a way that it doesn't really for saylee (which, to clarify, isn't a dig at saylee! Just an observation that Mal has very complicated feelings about both Book and Simon in a way that Kaylee doesn't).
The Mal aspect there is obvious, his religious trauma might as well be written on his forehead, and while I don't think he grew up with religious homophobia I think after the war he started keeping track of everything Christianity as an institution has done wrong, and as such would be VERY defensive of his and Simon's queerness (and his crew's queerness!!) even though Book actually does not care.
For Simon, though, I think Book is a bit of a uhhhh not quite father figure, but someone Simon looks up to and respects in a way that is affected by his relationship with his father. And what we know about Gabriel Tam is that he cares about Appearances, is willing to disown Simon if he fails to keep up those Appearances, and did in fact disown him for failing to keep up those Appearances. So it's not a stretch to imagine that queerness falls under a violation of said Appearances. Combine that with the history of religious homophobia, and you've got a recipe for Simon to be very anxious about how Book perceives queer relationships. ESPECIALLY with Mal, who may or may not have had a fight with Book of at any given moment. Also, I headcanon that the Core thinks of the Rim as full of horrible bigotry and backwards views (similar to how people in more suburban/urban environments thinks about people in rural environments), which I think Simon unlearns as the show goes on but would ultimately factor into this scenario.
Basically I cannot WAIT to get to Objects in Space in my rewrite because I need to explore the themes here
