Pokemon Card of the Day #1665: Keldeo EX (Boundaries Crossed)
At a time where Pokemon Catcher was in almost every deck for its ability to force out whatever Pokemon a player wanted, having a way around that was critical. Even later, when Pokemon Catcher required a flip and Lysandre, a Supporter, became a more restricted version of it, this ability was very useful. Keldeo EX provided decks with a way to pivot around quite easily as long as it was provided with just enough help to let it switch out itself, usually through the use of Float Stone. That alone was enough to make Keldeo EX a serious option for a large number of decks. Add in its ability as an attacker if put into a Water-type deck and you had something primed to make a huge impact on the game.
170 HP was exactly what you’d expect from a Pokemon EX and usually enough to stick around for at least a little while. The Grass Weakness mattered most in the NXD-On format due to the popularity of Virizion EX and Genesect EX, but you’d also see something like the occasional Leafeon or something like that in that and other formats. Keldeo EX itself needed 2 Energy to retreat. To take advantage of its amazing Ability, you needed something like Float Stone unless you were pairing with Darkrai EX.
Rush In was absolutely fantastic. It let you, if Keldeo EX was on your Bench, switch it with your Active Pokemon. This gave you a free switch for something that would otherwise be stuck, and one that didn’t care about Special Conditions or the like. Pair this with a way to ignore Keldeo EX’s Retreat Cost and you had almost unlimited movement. The one problem was that this strategy was extremely vulnerable to Garbodor, meaning that you probably wanted Tool Scrapper around.
Secret Sword was pretty weak at the start, as 50 damage for 3 Colorless Energy didn’t keep up with the times. That changed if you were using Water Energy, as each Water Energy on Keldeo EX added 20 more. This actually let Keldeo EX be an attacker in Blastoise decks since 110 damage for 3 Energy was definitely good enough for the era. It wasn’t always the deck’s main attacker but was definitely a useful option.
Keldeo EX was seen all over the place, especially in the BLW-On format with a full-powered Pokemon Catcher. It could fit in almost any deck that didn’t use Garbodor, even in later formats, since that pivoting Ability was extremely useful. Okay, so it did have that issue with Garbodor shutting it down pretty badly, but Keldeo EX was great in any deck that wanted its abilities and that meant it was useful in a large majority of games. Bonus points for being support and offense for Blastoise decks as well. This was one of the most common cards to see during its time in the game and for very good reason.
