Kelmscott Press Day was this past Saturday, a celebration of William Morris's influential Press. Founded by Morris in 1891, the Kelmscott Press produced over fifty books in just seven years, the first being the incomparable edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer.

Pictured here is a page from the Kelmscott Beowulf, printed in 1895.

Binding the Kelmscott Chaucer, Part Eight: Completion

So the time had finally come where I could say that the book and box were completely finished therefore time for photography to commence! The following images are now also on my website, along with a few more shots of the binding and box.

Not the best photograph but I thought it was important to get an image of me holding the book, one to show the sense of scale and two to prove that I actually did it(!).

And off it then went to the New York Antiquarian Book Fair where it took pride of place on booth E33, the stand of Bromer Booksellers from Boston. 

What an honour it was to say that I have bound a copy of the Kelmscott Chaucer, there are not going to be many opportunities such as this and it was a really amazing journey from beginning to end that I have been pleased to share through these series of blog posts.

Devolverle al trabajo la dimensión humana. Algo en lo que pensaba aquél polímata y militante socialista británico llamado William Morris. Una de sus principales criticas al sistema de producción industrial era el de convertir a los trabajadores en meras herramientas. Una cosificación real que más tarde adquiría el eufemismo de "recurso humano". La otra crítica tenía que ver con la calidad de los productos fabricados en masa que, en pos de la rentabilidad, iban perdiendo calidad. Como admirador y estudioso de las artes y oficios medievales, e impulsó junto a otros artistas el movimiento Arts & Crafts. En particular, le disgustaba el acabado de los libros de la época, producto de la industria editorial, por eso fundó en 1891 la Kelmscott Press, basando el diseño, la estructura y la manufactura de sus ejemplares en los incunables del siglo XV. Morris inventó tipografías para sus ediciones y sus aportes al diseño siguen siendo estudiados hasta la actualidad. Utilizó también letras capitales grabadas en madera y las ilustraciones que se incluyeron en algunas ediciones también eran grabadas en madera. 1. Sello de la Kelmscott Press 2. William Morris 3. Ese año (por fin) se viene el primer William Morris en Barba de Abejas: . El arte de hacer libros contiene "Imprimir" de WM y Emery Walker, "Encuadernar" de T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, la nota de WM sobre su intención al fundar la Kelmscott Press y la breve historia de esta editorial (madre de la edición artesanal) escrita por S.C. Cockerell. .
