Žilvinas Kempinas
When visiting the IKON Gallery in Birmingham yesterday there was an exhibition of the work by Žilvinas Kempinas. The first room, as you walked in was filled with branch like structures packed into the space, leaving only a line pathway in which to walk through. Projected onto the walls was black and white footage of trees etc., however as if the viewers was looking up at through them into the sky.
In the next room there was a large, circular piece of duct-tape like material hovering in the air by a large fan situated above. It moved freely around a small section area, and was almost beautiful to watch.
In the final room it was completely blacked out besides the pieces of work. From the ceiling hung long strips of a similar piece to the one in the previous room. Along the walls were circles framed. They looked moon-like due to the surfaces being rough and bumping- similar to craters. On the far side of the room played a film which was similar to when the TV looses signal or when a video would finish and you’d be left with the black and white scratching lines filling the scree. It was mesmerizing to watch and I stood there just staring for almost 30 minutes in an almost ‘trance’. It was an opposite reaction to when it happens on the tv where it’s irritating and you just want to stop it, Kempinas had made it almost beautiful to watch and listen to.
