Semi-finalized design for Inu.  I accompanied it with little sketches of how he relates to the rest of the Sapphire team.  I’m trying to build them up as being a big family.  Inu is the second oldest, right after Mashimizu who is the starter and oldest by default.  So he’s gotta have some strong big bro energy.  And later on, because Mightyena learns Thief naturally, I used him as the start of a breeding chain to get Thief on a bunch of other things.  So I want his adult design to also work as a dad kind of character.  He’s now the head of a whole clan of thieves, but he’s the only wolfy one amongst them.  His wife is a Bibarel so it’s a whole clan of beaver thieves.  Which is a pretty fun idea I might want to work with.

The end of the breeding chain was a Yanma with Thief and Compound Eyes so I might want to reverse-engineer some bug motif back up the ancestral line?  Maybe put a dragonfly decal on his clothes somewhere...

I’ve had a design for Kikyou for a while, but never did unevolved forms for her.  So here we go.  What’s interesting is that with some of my Pokemon, I designed them gijinka-first.  For those they tend to look like just a straight interpretation of the original Pokemon’s colors and features.  But I made Kikyou’s normal (feral?) form first so I had already made some color decisions to distance her from standard Gardevoirs.  That’s why there’s so much blue and yellow in her outfits, and why her hair is so dark.  Eventually I should do feral and anthro forms for the other gijinkas, so I’ll be reverse-engineering the process.

Kikyou’s origin is that I got through the scripted sequence with Wally when he catches a Ralts and I basically shrieked internally “WHAT IS THAT, YOU CAN GET THOSE ON THIS ROUTE?  I’M GONNA GET ONE” and then I did.

I’ve saved the layered verison of this so I can go back in and good-drawing it if I ever find the time.  I had a scenario in my head where the Sapphire team has to spend their first night together in Petalburg Woods.  Wurmples evolve early so Kemushi is in Silcoon form, which leaves her vulnerable to predators.  The family is here to protect her.  I put some of them in human form and others in their natural states just to see how they’d look as a mix.

Kemushi is another of those designs that I had developed Pokemon-first.  The regular form of Kem is already a Beautifly with altered colors, so the gijinka design reflects those.  But I never did Wurmple and Silcoon counterparts with those color choices.  So the gijinkas of those are from scratch.  Kem’s theme is that she likes sour foods, so I changed her butterfly wing patterns to resemble lemons and gave her more yellows.  That’s it, that’s the whole logic behind it.

Did Kemushi’s full art.  And then I did a little sketch of some of the 3rd genners hanging out.  In Sapphire, more than most games, I REALLY stuck hard with the first handful of Pokemon I caught.  I’m imagining now that it’s like I started the journey like it was a 1st grade field trip and I’ve got all these goofy kids to wrangle.

Taillows eat Wurmple.  It’s in their Pokedex data, it’s explicit.  Kemushi and Tsubame have been on the team since the start, and they’re like siblings, but I can’t imagine they started out friends.  Maybe now as adults that’s their in-joke.

I had Tsubame, a Swellow, EV trained a while ago and had a design in mind.  It’s easy to turn a Swellow’s little slicked back feather crest into a hairstyle.  I just never did it.  I want to give every gijinka three ‘stages’ even when they’re not three stage evolution lines, so I have a kid, teen, and adult design for each character.  So Tsubame has sort of a character arc of going from an insecure route 1 bird to a confident team staple.

Mashimizu had a design draft but I didn’t like it.  I like the way I did his eyes for this one.  I rarely put piercings on characters, but it made sense to put some spikes on his ears.  So now almost my entire Hoenn team is designed.  Inu the Mightyena doesn’t really have a design yet so I kind of just scribbled out what a Mightyena gijinka would look like.  It’s a jumping point for a later design, I guess.
