In 1987,  Guess?, Inc. commissioned Ken Griffiths to take the photographs for a limited edition book entitled The Panhandle, designed by Derek Birdsall RDI.

“I was photographing in Clarendon, Texas, when this truck parked in front of me. I was going to ask the driver to move but changed my mind when I saw this subject. The picture [Robbi and Son] led to me being commissioned for a book about the Texas Panhandle. I like it because it wasn’t planned and it sums up what I feel is important about photography: recording life as it really is.”  Ken Griffiths (quote from Photographers and their Images by Fi McGhee. Ken Griffiths - Patagonia

Last night I had the pleasure of being invited along to the opening of Ken Griffiths 'Patagonia' Exhibition at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in Chelsea. 

Printed with a special technique - Carbo Printing - which was invented in 1863 but died out in the 1950's, New Zealand born Grittith's is known for his skills in printing, previously recieving the Association of Photographers Award for Platinum printing for a previous project.

It was refreshing to see a photographer mastering techniques that could have soon be forgotten. The images were beautiful and definitely had an almost painterly quality as a result of the printing process; using pigments as opposed to dyes allows for a great artistic approach. 

The photos were one of the reasons that Film Director Marc Evans decided to create his film which goes by the same name. Especially as he was working alongside Rebekah Gilbertson - Griffith's wife.

Moved by the story and struggles of the Welsh settlers in Patagonia, Griffiths travelled to Chubut an Argentine province in West Patagonia, the images compare life now to life then. As I was leaving Ken was arriving, a pity as I would have loved to speak to him about his processes and experiences. The images really had a presence to them, and with the printing gave them a sense of being old and precious.  I love film and colour printing and think it's such a shame that the processes are being lost. There was one image printed on aluminium that despite the almost 'vintage' feel to the image had a contemporary edge.  Good to see colour being taken care of so well.
