Kenji Utsumi – Little Shop of Horrors Japanese Dub

It’s the twenty-third day of the month of September, so here is Kenji Utsumi’s performance as Audrey II.

I wonder when this dub was made. If it was a relatively soon after the release of the movie, it would be fun to imagine Kenji Utsumi did the dubbing for Audrey II while also working on Dragon Ball as Shenron, Commander Red, or later in Z as Reacoom as well.

The songs weren’t dubbed, so all his footage fits in this video. Also, I’ve included Da-Doo at the end as a bonus, since it’s the only song mostly dubbed due to being just Seymour talking.

1. What are your honest thoughts on your appearance in FMA?

It was long and short… but when it was over, it all happened so fast. It was a difficult piece, but it was very interesting and I enjoyed playing it. There was a great atmosphere on set, and I'd like to thank the cast and staff once again!

長かったような短かったような・・・でも終わってみるとあっという間でしたね。難しい作品だっけど、とても面白く楽しんで演じることができました。現場も非常に良い雰囲気で、キャスト・スタフの皆さんに改めて感謝です！

2. What is the way of life of the character you played, and what is the strongest impression it left on you?

He's a muscular man, he’s honest and has a samurai spirit, like a Sengoku warrior. He was a simple, straightforward and unhateable character.

ムキムキの筋肉マンで、実直だし、侍魂を持った戦国武将のような男ですね。単純明快で憎めないキャラクターだったな。

3. What was your favourite scene or line to perform?

I liked the scene in which he shows off his muscles as he fights, saying the key line, “It has been passed down in the Armstrong family for generations…”. There were also scenes where I was moved by the conversation with the Elric brothers… although in the second half he was always getting angry with his big sister (laughs).

なんといっても「我がアームストロング家に代々伝わりし・・・」という決め台詞をいいながら、筋肉を誇示して戦うシーンが好きだったかな。エルリック兄弟との会話でジーンとくる場面もあったりして・・・後半ではお姉ちゃんに怒られてばっかりだったけどな（笑）。

4. Now that you have finished your long journey, is there anything you would like to say to the character you played?

“Well done! Thank you for your hard work” I'd like to say that to Armstrong, of course, and above all to myself for playing such a muscular role at my age* (laughs).

「よくやった！お疲れ様」アームストロングにも勿論そうだし、なによりこの歳であんなにムキムキな役をやった自分にもいってあげたいね（笑）。

*Shoco’s note: He turned 73 in 2010.

5. Do you have a message for your fans?

It's a difficult story, but as you can imagine, fans have followed it very closely. It's not often you find a work like this that has a depth that adults can also enjoy, so I think it will remain in everyone's memories. Keep up the good work FMA!

難しい話だけど、さすがファンはよくついてきてくれたと思います。大人も楽しめる奥深さを持つこういった作品はなかなかないので、皆さんの思い出に残るんじゃないかな。これからも「FA」をよろしく！

Armstrong’s Ending

The Elric brothers were blessed with a fine teacher.

I can tell just by looking at them. But with a fine teacher, it’s only a matter of time before the student becomes the master.

I truly look forward to seeing them grow.

As for me, I shall not remain idle.

I, Alex Louis Armstrong, shall dedicate myself to my training, body and soul, so that I may fight the good fight for the weak of our nation!

Izumi: Hey, those are some pretty fine muscles you have there. Not as good as my husband’s, of course. Ed, Al, hurry up and grow big and strong like these two hunks of beefcake!
