whispers. frantic breathing. the promises of safety hidden behind shifty eyes, a gaze that drifted too far from the gaze of the other’s. all clear signs that mia was not in her right mind. that she had succumbed, partially, to the unknowingly callous grip of the child she was meant to be protecting. she knew the man’s words were fair— knew that no ordinary person could simply turn the back to such a situation. yet she assumed he would take the position to find an officer, someone local, someone who knew of the baker’s attempts to capture.
