#TN : Webtoon Author for “True Beauty” Under Fire
Webtoons are digital comics posted online and have been all the rave in Korea in recent years. Aside from being eco-friendly, people are attracted to webtoons for their beautiful graphics, the occasional flash animations and music and, of course, their stories. Of course, they’re also pretty accessible through online forums, such as those of Naver, and the author’s constant interaction with readers’ feedback has contributed to the Webtoon popularity.
In the same way that books get movie adaptations, popular webtoons reach deals with production companies to bring their stories to life for the public to see. Such are the cases of hit dramas “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,” and “Itaewon Class” (2019), and the films “Moss” and “Secretly Greatly.”
Back in February, webtoon drama author, Yaongyi, confirmed via her Instagram that her popular hit series, “True Beauty | 여신강김,” will air sometime at the end of 2020. Kpop idol Cha EunWoo of ASTRO has been confirmed as the drama’s male lead character, Lee SuHo, and actress Moon GaYoung is currently considering an offer by tvN for the female lead character, JuGyung.
The three main characters in the webtoon, JuGyung, SuHo and SeoJoon, are rumoured to be inspired after celebrities SeolHyun of AOA, Cha EunWoo of ASTRO, and VIINII respectively. In recent episodes where new character, MC YeJin, who looks like model Han HyeJin, was introduced, netizens began to question if these characters’ uncanny similarities to real artists are violating the publicity rights of the celebrities.
As the controversy continued to grow, artist Kim NaYoung, Yaongyi’s real name, opened up about the issue and defended her work comparing it to Disney cartoon characters who were modelled after real-life actors. What she failed to realize about that is that those actors were paid by Disney to model and wear the costumes they wanted their animated characters to wear in the film. They used them as guides when drawing the characters — not selected randomly from another film or off a magazine. The argument here is that Kim NaYoung did not pay or consulted with the celebrities prior to modelling her story characters after them.
Readers have expressed their disappointment and anger about her response, but that only resulted in Ms Kim stating she will be taking legal action against aggressive comments that hurt her work, adding fuel to the fire she’s under.
What will this mean for the release of tvN’s drama? We will have to wait and see how this unfolds.
When Bong Joon Ho appeared on the cover of Variety with Neon founder and CEO Tom Quinn, the “Parasite” director’s comments about Marvel movies went viral. He said he had no interest in making a sup…
These are such exciting and happy news for the Korean movie industry! Bong JoonHo’s movie 기생충 / Parasite is the first Korean movie to win the Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language award at the Golden Globes, and it received two nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Director. Have you seen Bong JoonHo’s Parasite already? It is such a brilliantly made film. I absolutely enjoyed it. If you haven’t watched it because you hate reading subtitles, get over it. The world sees, loves and enjoys our movies with subtitles. Can’t we learn to do the same for foreign movies, as well? They deserve recognition and love, as well. If you’re curious about other of his great movies, I highly recommend Okja and Memories of Murder.
Really quick question, this is for my web design class btw.
Would you guys find a website that offered minimalistic korean/kentertainment/kpop designed accessories, and prints worthwhile?

Jeon So Min's brother, Jeon Wook Min recently took to his Instagram Story to reveal malicious DMs from who he predicts is a fan of Running Man.

I really wish netizens would learn to stop being so rude and ill-natured towards artists. Just because someone new joins a long-time running show, is it really justifiable to hate on them? Want to kick them out? Accusing them of “trying too hard” and wishing them harm?
They’re so despicable.
In my opinion, a new cast member helps keep a show fresh. They should always be welcomed warmly and wish for them to do great. As entertainers, it is their job to keep us entertained, and they’re there to do their best for you.
Let’s all spread love and good wishes to artists that are trying their best everyday for us.
Thank you for bringing smiles and fresh air to the Running Man we all love, Jeon SoMi!
