Fresh Roasted Arabica Coffee from Canada
If enjoying the full flavour of coffee – the aroma, acidity, and body is important, then not only are the right beans necessary, but also when they were roasted. Fresh roasted coffee beans can be well worth the time and effort they require.
The roasting process is what produces the characteristic flavour of coffee. Over time, the overall quality of the coffee will fade, making freshly roasted coffee beans preferable to many people.
Roasting the Beans
The high heat involved in roasting the beans causes the green bean to expand and change in density, taste, smell, and color. Most roasters know the importance of temperature in producing fresh roasted coffee beans.
• As the beans take in heat, they gradually change in color, from green to yellow then on to deepening shades of brown. In the final stages, the roaster will notice oils coming from the bean which gives them a shine.
• There are two distinct snapping sounds released from the beans while roasting. The first cracking sound begins the light roast and the second marks the medium roast. After that point, come the darker roasts.
The gradual change in color and the distinctive snapping sounds the beans produce while roasting are two factors that establish the right degree of roast.
Distinguishing the Roasts
Although color change is not 100% accurate, many have found they can tell the degree of roast with this method. Because beans continue to darken with age, the color method cannot stand alone in determining the right roast.
• Light roasts do not have distinctive roast flavours, so many brands produce flavoured coffee beans at this point – cinnamon roast, for instance, is a perfect example of a light roasted coffee bean.
• Medium roasts have more body than light roasts so there is more balance between acidity and aroma which produces the smoother medium roasts – breakfast roast is a very typical name for medium roasts.
• Dark roasts exhibit the characteristic oils, which produce full-bodied roasts ranging from spicy to a smoke-sweet flavour – continental and French are examples of dark roasts.
Fresh Roasted Delivers
No matter which type of roast is preferred, having freshly roasted beans will ensure the maximum flavour and body per cup. After a period of several weeks, the distinct flavours and aromas will begin to weaken, so keeping a fresh supply on hand is a must.
