hold on I just remembered that I sent you, like, an essay on Karai Being Cool Actually I'm So Smart And Impartial while I was recovering from dentist anesthesia the other night. but I don't know what was actually in it. like my memory's garbage even when I'm not high. so like,, what did I say????? was it coherent or did I just kinda cry about her in your inbox lmao
Imma just copy and paste it all for you:
tbh I like how stubborn Karai is; in my mind, it's a core character trait, right up with Raph's anger issues (emotional disregulation and lack of healthy coping skills), Don's... creepiness (communication problems, fear of rejection, and lack of role models to teach him how healthy relationships work), Leo's reckless self-sacrificial streak (BIG time parentification and self-esteem reliant on perceived worth to others), and the messy, conflicted emotional rollercoaster that is April's life (idc what the writers were trying to do, she is SO accurate to how it feels growing up autistic as a girl shouldered with unreasonable expectations). Sometimes the most interesting thing about a character is what's "wrong" with them, and... Personally, I have kind of a nihilistic view on people, so that's what I tend to focus on, as the starting point from which they can grow as individuals and learn to deal with their issues. To me, Karai's stubbornness and repeated "obvious" mistakes read as her desperately trying to maintain control and comfort in an unfamiliar situation that isn't getting better and will never be what she used to know and has adapted to survive in. It will get better eventually, sure, but she doesn't know that. To make matters worse, after everything that happened with her adoptive father, her ability to trust her elders who could warn her of what's ahead has been compromised, whether she acknowledges it or not; essentially, this means she has to find out everything the hard way before it sticks, and even then, it might just be a fluke, so she still might not get it the first few times. Soon, it becomes a pattern. There is a certain level of comfort in knowing you are wrong and will be hurt for it, if that's what you think you deserve. It's... Familiar, I guess? It feels very real, when you've been through a similar process of fighting your own growth and healing, especially at that age. So personally, although it is frustrating, I think it makes sense this way because that feeling of frustration is the point, y'know? It's ugly, it's uncomfortable, and it is so earnestly human.
ketchup + ranch = fry sauce
OH I LIKE THAT ACTUALLY
I’ve never actually had fry sauce before?? It looks SO good tho……
Yo! Sorry for the wait, I've been busy working on sideblogs.
Anyway, this is roughly what I have in mind. I did two versions: one before I knew what I was actually looking for, and the other when I did.
Consider that one a rough draft, and...
This shows more of what I want that might make it distinct from other themes. Here are some close-ups, if my handwriting is hard to read.
I'm not an expert on graphic design, much less for websites, so I just got out my ruler for the dimensions and went from there. I know this version is a LOT more complicated, but I figured, if it's going to be a completely new theme, I should come up with something that would work for more people than just me.
What do you think? Are there some major design principles that I'm missing? I'll leave that up to your best judgement.

whew, these are some pretty in-depth designs! this is a huge help, thank you so much! i did my best to follow your layout as closely as possible, though i did end up shuffling some stuff around for various reasons. i'll post the theme itself in just a moment, so you'll be able to check out the differences yourself, but there's a list of the main changes i made under the cut
i hope you like the theme, even slightly altered as it is! if you have any specific requests for changes, you could dm me and i'll see what i can do
removed the scrollbar & put the previous/next page links on the top/bottom instead of the side: for accessibility reasons i don't want to move the scrollbar away from the side of the actual page, and since having the bar just for the page buttons would look kind of awkward i moved them too
second tags section in sidebar replaced by custom blog pages section: i wanted to include the custom blog pages section somewhere, since it's a tumblr-supported way of adding links, and since there were already the four tag links above i figured replacing this would work
likes/reblogs count replaced by single notes count and like/reblog buttons: this one's on tumblr, they don't give us variables for like/reblog counts separately :( still, i figured this should work as far as balancing it out goes!
having first/previous/next/last buttons bracketing all posts instead of under main images: this is largely because with the new post formats, tumblr doesn't let you create the classic photo posts anymore, so even if i implemented pagination under images it'd create a weird situation where some posts (created before the NPF switch or in the old post editor) would have pagination under images while others (created as NPF posts in the new beta editor) wouldn't show pagination. figured i'd bypass that whole issue and just make it standard top/bottom
reordered the post footers a bit, putting the tags under the main permalink/share buttons: this was largely because when i added the via/source links, the post tags section was getting pretty squished, so i compensated by rearranging it and putting the "show tags" button where you had the tags originally

shouting and running away and throwing things that are in my way
^ i am scared of bug
side-note: both of the last two posts have been GOD TIER, I would LOVE a Mutanimals spin-off and it's hilarious that Raph has a scar from a shopping cart but not The Worm Incident
Thank you! 😊
I’m definitely working on more ideas for a Mutanimals spin off show and I’m hoping I can share with everyone someday. I have a lot of notes and really cool ideas for each of the characters I’d love to share!
Also I like to think that Raph does have a scar from the brain worm incident. We just can’t see it because it’s hidden behind his mask. The shopping cart thing will always make me laugh though, because that is a canon fact. Bro got his shell chipped cause he got ran over by a shopping cart as a baby. Do you think he gets PTSD when he sees a shopping cart? Lol
I like to think of k'Varthak as a sort of Anakin figure. Part of the reason g'Throkka is so angry about what happened (aside from, y'know, the maiming) is that he genuinely tried to help Var but was pushed away. He only accepted it when Var left him to die, casting off his moral compass and the last connection to home he had left in order to thrive in his new role as a cutthroat mercenary.
Mona herself has a bit of a mean streak, and at first, g'Throkka was scared she would end up like his lost student, but over time it's become clear that she is led by her sense of justice, not just the thrill of bloodshed... Though, he's seen just how easily one can be corrupted into the other. One day, her stubbornness and idealism will get her into trouble. He just hopes she won't forget who she is when it forces her to choose.
I've always thought of this too!!
I always liked the idea that Newtralizer was an old pupil/student of Sal Commander who he believes he failed.
For those who don't know, my headcanon for Newt's backstory is that he was a student of Sal's who grew to love battle. Now on Salamandria, everyone loves to fight. It's their culture. They love it because it brings them honor, but for Newt he loved it for the violence. He enjoyed the bloodshed. Newt went mad and Sal blames himself for the dark path his student/friend went on because he believes he he is responsible for guiding him down the path of violence and encouraging him.
I definitely agree that Sal must have been sceptical of taking in Mona Lisa as his student because he didn't want to fail or lose another person he cared about. And my HC of Mona losing her parents at a young age, Sal was scared that this would be her turning point to a similar path as Newt, but he was wrong. He continued to train her and not make the same mistake he did when he trained Newt.
I mostly take inspiration from the dynamic of Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda and how he treated/trained Tai Lung vs Tigress.
Yo. Last of a Dying Breed by Fall Out Boy is a RaMona song. First verse is Mo's, second verse is Raph's. Just trust me on this one
I know have I new song to jam out to and listen to on repeats for hours now!
