Houghton/Hancock

A few views from Houghton/Hancock: this is in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula in the UP of Michigan.

The first images was taken at the old Quincy Mine which towers above Hancock to the north just a bit. The area is famous for the copper what was mined here.

The second and third images were made down on the water that separates the two alliterative towns. That's the Portage Canal Lift Bridge—built in 1959, it was designed for both highway and rail traffic. (The railroad ran on the lower deck but was abandoned in 1982.)

Way Up North

Maybe not literally the last place on earth, but pretty damn close.

For the past few days Sharon and I have been bumming around Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula - way out there in Eagle Harbor, which is about as far north as you can go before you run into Lake Superior.

The bottom photo shows the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. The top photo is a gift shop in a town called Phillipsville, on U.S. 41 in Houghton County.

I've crossed the bridge many times but the wild beauty of the U.P. always feels new.
