Semester Break: Precedent research Key Precedent - Maggie’s Centres
After reading/listening to Charles Jencks lecture on healing architecture I was introduced to he and his wife’s (Maggie’s) story and the centres they built as a result. Maggie was terminally ill with cancer and through her draining treatment process had the notion that cancer treatment environments and their results could be drastically improved through good design. Maggie’s Centre is a cancer caring centre open to the people suffering from cancer and their families and friends to empower people to live through and beyond cancer. Currently there are 21 Maggie Centre’s dotted over the UK and 9 planned or in the process of being designed and constructed.
Operation and construction costs of the center are fully covered by charity donations from the supporters. The Trust continues to create similar centres across the UK to provide the mental and family-like support to the patient on outpatient basis and in a friendly casual non-clinical setting.
I will be selecting 3 of the centre to look at and use as precedents.
