Have a seat and let me tell you a story (a story of a man called Theseus)

okay but actually, it’s kinda funny

so I was a warrior cats fan for many years. Still am, technically, but I’m less active since mcyt took over my consciousness. Regardless, warrior cats MAPs got me interested in amateur animation. (Some of them are insane look them up I don’t know how half these artists are high schoolers they are bonkers talented) ANYWAY.

so I’m (re)watching the Potato Wars last year in late August (YES I KNOW) and in the little “recommended” sidebar I see a video called Hog Hunt. My YouTube recommendations are turned off, so I usually only see things directly related to whatever I’m watching. “Ooh,” I say, “a technoblade animation? That sounds cool!” And I click on it.

I watch the animation, I am stunned at the quality, and I am SO CONFUSED. So I go to Sad-ist’s channel, and speedrun all her DSMP animatics horribly out of order. I am even more confused. I try again, watching them in some semblance of order. I am slightly less confused. “Huh,” I think, “this is kinda cool!” I remember when I was much younger, hearing about the Dream SMP and how it was “so cringe”, but I am watching these animatics and strongly disagreeing. I honestly don’t remember exactly where I went from there. I start getting dsmp fanart in my Pinterest feed, seeing analysis screenshots, watching more and more animatics, finding Derivakat’s music through a random Pinterest animatic reupload, et cetera. I watch some of Technoblade’s VODs, which I had avoided before because again “oh dsmp is cringe” how wrong I was. I’m still quite confused, and scared to try to find all the lore videos, because I am just beginning to see how far the iceberg goes.

One day, I decide to watch Sad-ist’s Passerine animatic, like a fool. I am once again incredibly confused, and also very sad. I click on the link in the description. Locked fic. Darn it. Better get an ao3 account. Pinterest has started recommending me fics in the form of incredible fanart of them. I decided “tommyinnit’s clinic for supervillains” looks cool. It’s unlocked! Yay! (My invitation finally goes through like five hours after I start reading.) I read Clinic in about six hours one evening, and Passerine in about five the next day. I am in shambles. “More!” I yell at my Pinterest. Pinterest obliges. Pinterest also later reveals the existence of the Passerine Podcast to me, and I get to experience chapter 25 emotional damage all over again. The author interview with bonesandthebees also introduces me to what would later become my favorite dsmp fic of all time, the stars and their children. (Stars broke me. I love stars so much.)

At some point, I find a video titled “explaining the dream smp lore so you don’t have to watch it” and I click on it so fast I break the sound barrier. Four and a half hours is NOTHING on the hundreds and thousands of hours of footage I might have had to get through otherwise. I finally have a concept of the full story, even though kurkarl is very clear that it’s just one retelling.

Pinterest keeps recommending me fics, ao3 keeps causing me emotional damage, and the block men slowly take over my thoughts.

I have this Tumblr because of “on being reborn someplace else”, which I found while scrolling DSMP “no beta we die like” tags and was instantly hooked. Reborn, with some other factors, is also how I got pulled into the life series fandom!

That’s all I can think of for now! Sorry for the incredibly long ramble, but it’s a funny story!
