The Los Martires de Cuba (The Martyrs of Cuba) monument in Key West Cemetery. The following is the story behind the monument, text in the third photo, as written by the San Carlos Institute, fourth photo: Los Martires de Cuba (“Cuban Martyrs”) Plot at the Key West Cemetery honors the thousands of the Cubans who fought for Cuba’s independence from Spain. It was established by Key West’s Cuban Community in 1892 at a time when Key West was Florida’s largest city. The city’s population was composed largely of Cuban exiles who worked in the thriving cigar industry. Raw tobacco leaves were imported from Cuba and hand-rolled into cigars in Key West’s large cigar factories. The practice avoided high custom duties and enabled the finished cigars to be sold in the United States as a domestic product at competitive prices. The Cuban Martyrs’ plot is separated from the surrounding grounds by a wrought iron fence and gates bearing the seal of the Republic of Cuba. The flags of Cuba and the United States fly daily on each side of the gates. The obelisk at the center of the plot honors the four Cuban armies who fought the Spaniards in the Ten Years War that began in 1868. Each side of the obelisk bears the name of one of the four insurgent Cuban armies. The inscriptions on other monuments in the plot pay tribute to those who suffered imprisonment or death in the struggle for Cuba’s freedom. The only person known to be buried in the Cuban Martyrs Plot is Antonio Diaz Carrasco, a resident of Key West who arrived from Cuba as a nine-year old exile, studied at the San Carlos Institute and later served as one of its teachers. When Cuba won its independence in 1902, Carrasco was appointed as the first Cuban consul in Key West and served in this capacity from 1903 until his death in 1915. The Cuban Martyrs’ Plot is maintained by the board of the historic San Carlos Institute, the Cuban educational and patriotic center founded in 1871 and located at 516 Duval Street in Key West. The history of the Cuba Martyrs Plot and the San Carlos are closely intertwined. #keywestcemetery #cemetery #keywest #sancarlosinstitute #cuba #cubanhistory #keywesthistory #florida (at Key West Cemetery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgMjnLDLUMS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Talking to Spirits: Lots of SPIRITS waiting, doing nothing- Key West Cemetery Do you believe in talking to spirits? A Spirit tells me they have to wait in the Cemetery while doing nothing. While on vacation a few weeks ago in Key West, FL, I visited the cemetery like I normally do when down there. I use the DR60 recorder and PanaBox and get a spirit who told me some interesting stuff about being there. Even more of the same confirmations through the spirit box. What’s said at the end I find extremely interesting.
