Annie..Annie..i have been meaning to ask for eons... how do you keep your hair such a gorgeous shade of red? I'm probably going to put a bit of henna in mine to cover those scraggly greys but I would love a strong red like yours. Cheers darl
I shall tell you all my secrets, Kez. Cause I love ya ;-) Okay. So. First thing, I use salon color. I get it off Amazon. This stuff:
Whoa. That’s a big pic. Okay. Anyway. Loreal HiColor in Magenta. It comes in other colors. That’s just the one I get. I always use 2 because I have long hair. You mix it with this stuff:
It comes in 20, 30, and 40 … I go for the strongest. Because why the hell not. With those two things, you can get vibrant bright color without having to bleach your hair first. That’s how it was for me anyway, and my natural color is brown. Although I’m not sure what my natural hair color is anymore ;-) Haven’t seen it in a good long while.
So to maintain it. I don’t wash it every day. I have lots of shower caps. And I utilize dry shampoo. I love dry shampoo. I love trying new dry shampoos. My favorite of all time is Living Proof, but that shit is expensive, so I usually either get the Batiste at the drug store, but it seems like there’s always new ones coming out. Like, I’m trying out a new Dove one right now and I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. So far so good. I mean, it smells good. Some of them smell terrible. Like fake cherries n shit. Not good.
I did try a Batiste dry shampoo specifically for red hair … and yeah, nope. No way, man. It was kind of like the stuff you spray in your hair on Halloween to turn your hair red for a night? It was horrifying. It keeps your hair red, but also your scalp! And forehead too. Ugh. Bad stuff.
Anyway. And so then when I wash my hair, I use shampoo and conditioner for red hair. I usually just use the John Frieda ones. Those are good and conveniently found at the drug store.
And then I’m trying out some new stuff that I’m liking … but I haven’t had them long enough to say YOU MUST USE THIS SHIT because it’s been like, a few weeks. But so far so good. It’s a hair mask for red hair. eSalon Devoted to Hue. It’s for people who want SUPER intense color. Like me. It’s not subtle ;-) But it definitely keeps your hair bright. The brand has other products for colored hair that I want to try in the future. Their prices are reasonable.
And aside from coloring my hair, I don’t fuck with it. Unless there’s some special occasion, I never blow dry it or curl it. I never use heat. Coloring it is the one damaging thing I do to it, and I think that helps too.
So yeah. I hope that helps. It also helps to have black towels just for your red hair ;-) And dark pillow cases.
