The Ocean || Starter for @witchofremembrance
The ocean surged up the beach and crashed into the sand. The salt left trails of white foam as the waves receded. Tiny, broken shells, left by the high tide, crunched beneath Xion’s boots as she walked down to the water. The sun was setting. Stained everything gold and purple, faded by smears of mist on the far horizon. Sometimes when Xion looked at the sea she could imagine how someone could see it and think, “this is a god.”
Namine crouched in the wake of a wave, sat back on her heels, searching the soft sand. As Xion watched she came up with the broken half of a curled shell, which glimmered in the sunlight. Up the beach the boys were still playing, chasing after a frisbee. The scene seems so pedestrian after the war. Not even a week ago Xion had fought Saix in the graveyard.
Now, he and Lea were playing together.
“I didn’t think I’d see you again,” Xion admitted.
There was too much meaning behind those words. Because they were true. Never did Xion imagine that Namine would get a second chance besides the one when Xion begged her to leave with her. The words echoed with the ‘goodbye’ Xion never said before she ran off to fight Axel. Soaked in her guilt and regret were the feelings that lurked beside them.
That Xion was taller now. That Xion survived while Namine and Roxas died. That Xion felt like a fundamentally different person now than she had back then, back in Twilight Town. She had a chance to grow-up. It seemed like they were the same. Xion was like a shell on the beach, left behind by the waves.
Still, she managed something like a smile.
“I’m glad to be surprised, Namine.”
