Hey, I have a genuine question: Why are people booking a LEISURE trip to Egypt right now? How do you causally parade like a tourist when there are TWO genocides happening by their borders? (A two year long genocide is taking place in Sudan for those who are unaware).
How can you go there? At this instant? And why do you feel compelled to go? I ask because a cousin of mine and his girlfriend went to Cairo a few days ago. They are posting their photos all over social media and being like: "Look, I saw the Pyramids of Giza! I rode a camel. I drove an ATV through the desert!" Then they act like they have a fucking conscience since they have visited Morocco and Türkiye.
I also have an uncle and his sister flying there next month. They are staying for a week. I even have a cousin who visits Dubai often! This is wild to know because these are relatives who consider themselves as being Pro Palestinians. But they are willing to spend $1,500 and more because it is their life, their money, and their desire to experience the world, while there are many who have been robbed from doing the same. They are hanging on a thread. Death is at their doorsteps.
Is this how far we can normalize genocide? Even as allies? How we can travel and ignore the pain and suffering next door? This is cruel. So fucking cruel.
