Khagrachhari - New Zealand & System
I’m must confess that I am enjoying my job quite a bit. Travelling across Bangladesh for campaign purposes, although the tropical heat is tiring me out a lot, long queues at ferry stations and long drives sometime can take its toll. I am a sincere believer that boredom was one sort of entertainment and that we like to be bored sometimes and enjoy doing ‘nothing’.
For travel, the best options are either mountains or beaches wherever you go. Khagrachari is a hill stop for me. Although I come here often for work but I do get the very best it has to offer. It’s a splendid place and if you judge by the lack of coverage in Lonely Planet’s outdated Bangladesh edition.
The scenery changes completely once you arrive at Khagrachhari. Surging hills fold and bend, making you wonder what is over the next rise and fall. Dhakaities really love Dhaka but it’s a disgusting city. Too many people, non-stop noise of horns, pedestrians on the road and stalls at the footpath, load shedding and to top all of it, the traffic jams. You will get some load shedding here but no jam at all.
Pleasure starts about 15 minutes after you take the left from Feni towards Ramgarh. The hills start from this district. Its basically a tea garden which turns into a forest as you go deeper into it towards Khagrachari. You can see the lush green tea plants and vibrant women collecting the leaves. It’s a wonderful scene.
Vibrant women of the hills.
I had to collect some case studies and take relative photographs. Its an exciting assignment especially because I am not professional photographer but I can do the job. I had a colleague with me who was an intern at our office doing some kind of research for us and also for her thesis.
If you have any expatriate with you, you will have to stop by and put in the required entry at the registration. I have been to this place quite a few times and to my embarrassment I cant explain if they find a fair lady who is pretty. Suddenly the authorities would want to speak to her more, they would want to know her country of origin etc. These are pretty unnecessary as the registration book will have all these information once she is done with.
You enter Khagrachari through the Cantonment and you should know that the military is the “boss” here.
I have stayed in only one hotel called “Meghla” (means cloudy in bangla) which is a Government run hotel. I can assure you that the service you get here is much better than any other Parjatan (Parjatan is Government run Tourism Board) of Government run institutions.
From the balcony at Meghla
Having been labeled “Foodie” I guess I have the right to comment on food however I want to. Food at Meghla is eatable. Whoever prepares it, is not a food enthusiast. You should have to wait about an hour once you have ordered. The location of the hotel is a nice one and has got plenty of empty spaces all around.
My personal favourite is the SYSTEM Restaurant at Khagrachari. It’s a wonderful place with indigenous food. Its small but caters to a big number of regulars. Its owned by a wonderful person called “Mong Marma” and is popularly known ad “Mong Da” (Da or Bhai means brother).
Its a Bamboo dish. its actually very good and I prefer it with rice and the tenderness is like that of a squid. A must try whenever you get the chance.
One of my personal favourite and I can also make one. Introducing the mushroom egg fry. Just put in salt and pepper and bit egg with mushroom and fry it. Its very good.
Beware of the shootkey. Its spicy like crazy. If you are a white, your face will go pink in 5 mins.
There is no shortage of items at System. There is no menu though. It works like this, you take a seat and almost everything will be presented before you, you can pick and chose. Once you are done, Mong Da will give you a price and you have to pay it. Its usually between 120-180 Tk.
Besides System, theres another interesting place in Khagrachari with yet another interesting name - New Zealand. Its basically a cafe with some munchies. Paddy fields on either side. Its a killer feeling. You must carry a mosquito repellent or else the mosquito will fly you away to the original New Zealand
During summer, it can be a torture. While you have to walk a few miles in remote areas to visit schools and have lunch way past routine hours and once you are back to the room in your hotel, you will find the load shedding. Electricity stutter like the speed humps on Sylhet road. But if you want to look at the brighter side, you have the fresh fruits and vegetable, fresh air and calmness which Dhaka can never offer you.
There is not shortage of politics of different kinds. Between tribes, among tribes, insurgents and rebels and there is also military there. But lets not discuss it.
The women are strong, the men are hardworking and the children are very cute. Amongst lots of greenery and smiling faces lives a deep hatred. Freedom!
