POV: You just burned the Bulgarian capital at Pliska and start hearing drums in the woods.

Context: Nikephoros I invaded Bulgaria in 811 AD. His massive army razed the Bulgarian capital; on his way home Khan Krum, the leader of Bulgaria, ambushed his army at the Varbitsa Pass. The Byzantine army was annihilated. Krum turned Nikephoros’s skull into a drinking cup.
