Hi again! Can you please explain to me how HSPS interviews work when some applicants get worried because their interviewer asks them about topic they're not interested in in HSPS? For example I know someone who applied with a focus on sociology but was asked about politics a lot. What's the deal and how can people avoid that?
The deal is that a fellow is more likely to ask you about something that they’re comfortable with. So if you’re really into politics, but you apply to a college with a sociology DoS, you may be asked questions with a more sociological focus because the DoS will have more expertise in that area and be able to assess your answers a bit better. Avoiding it is difficult unless you choose a DoS whose area of interest matches up with yours. If you can’t do that, then you just need to make sure that you excel in the questions that they do ask you about your favourite subject and try and maybe drive the conversation in that direction -- so if they ask you about sociology and you see a link to politics, you could bring it in. But because HSPS is so wide, they will want to see that you’re not just bringing everything back to a single topic -- try your best to integrate subjects and show that you’ve got a sort of understanding of how they influence one another!
Heyyy I wanna study IR as well! Is it true that since they allow you to take 3 subjects in your first year you can take anything with IR? Like I can take history and a language and continue on with only IR and history even if I only applied for IR? Also, any tips for personal statement writing?
Yes, you can take 3 subjects in your first year. I’m taking IR, Philo, and Modern History this year. I have no idea if I’ll like them at all but I’m going forward with it this year! For personal statements, I think it really depends where you live. For the UK they’re really looking for a straightforward “who are you and what does the subject have to do with you” kind of thing. For the US most schools look for that plus personality.
Hi there! My name is Lina and I wanted to ask what you're studying in St. Andrews? It's a brilliant uni and I'm looking to apply to it soon :D are you a home student or an international?
Hi Lina! I am going to be studying International Relations, although I am not entirely sure if I like it. I can always switch my major next year if I don’t like it! Also, I am an international student. I live in the US.
Hello! I see new admins are around and I thought I could ask this question again as I've asked Sarah about it before. Do any of you guys have experience applying to St. Andrews at all? Especially for a history and/or international relations degree? If so, please let me know. Thank you xx
I have a really close friend who studies IR at St. A’s- let me know if you’ve got any specific questions, and I can ask her & answer privately xx
