Tetsu Nakamura, 73, arrived in Afghanistan in the 1980s to treat leprosy. But he changed many more lives with the canal-building techniques he brought from his native Japan.
The Afghan authorities in Nangarhar said, by the time of his murder his canals had improved the livelihood of nearly a million people, and irrigated nearly 60,000 acres of previously arid land.
“A doctor treats patients one by one, but this helps a whole village,” Dr. Nakamura had said. “I love seeing a village that’s been brought back to life.”
“He showed us life — he helped build our land. He was a leader to us,” said Hamidullah Hashemi, a resident of Khewa. “I feel like they have killed my closest family member. They left us without Nakamura.”
The Wolf Park Puppy Party was a huge success! The puppies all did incredibly well with such a large crowd and it was awesome to see people so interested in learning about them and the socialisation process they’re going through!
Thanks to everyone who came out!
Introducing our newly named wolf puppies from the Wolf Mountain Nature Center!
The black-phase male is Niko, after Nikolaas Tinbergen the biologist. The lighter female is Khewa, which means Turtle in the language of the Lakota. Wolf Mountain’s first wolf was named Dancing Turtle so they requested we go with that name.
We’re so excited to have new puppies and more genetic diversity in the pack! And it’s going to be interesting to see how different they are to the Twiglet puppies when fully grown!
When you put out little effort to howl and the wolf puts out even less. Khewa is famous for her short little hooots. #wolves #wolvesofinstagram #wolfpark #khewathewolf #khewa https://www.instagram.com/p/CFCZJ_2HNjN/?igshid=1t9skpk2jazna
