It is the first genocide ruling against any member of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime.
Led by Saloth Sar, better known as Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge was a radical Maoist movement founded by French-educated intellectuals.
They sought to create a self-reliant, agrarian society: cities were emptied and residents forced to work on rural co-operatives. Many were worked to death while others starved as the economy imploded.
Это когда у тебя есть образование, но ты не понимаешь сути имеющейся у тебя информации об устройстве общества, и подходишь к социальным вопросам технически. Такое было не только в Камбодже. Такое часто происходит и сейчас.
I’ve met hundreds of young oversea #Khmers, or “#aneakajun,” as locals call us, in #Cambodia since I first step foot in #PhnomPenh in August 2005. And every time I hear their story, I get re-inspired by their commitment to returning back to serve the country that most barely know about besides what they’ve read in books and watched on the screens. Today, I met Chitra of #Germany. - The thirty something professional hails from #Düsseldorf, the 7th largest city in Germany popularly known for its fashion industry and arts scene. Earlier this month she started working for the Swiss company called Web Essentials as their program manager. Over dinner and drinks, we shared in the mutual excitement in connecting with other aneakajuns and become amused when discussing about language and cultural barriers. “I work with mostly #Khmer staff and everyday I learn something new about the way they think,” said Chitra. She plans to live in Cambodia for 1 to 3 years. - #aneakajun #khmershecan (at Sundown Social Club)
Chhanita (left) is a university student and media professional. One of the issues she brought up concerns how locals perceive sexuality and nudity in the country's emerging film scene. Many would say that her Prahok TV web series, which she script writes, pushes the boundary on these taboo topics. One of her goals is to produce a R rated film. Follow her work @these.hazel.day. - Votey (right) is a legal professional and newly minted #PhnomPenh resident. We first met in #Chicago when her partner and family joined in celebrating #Khmerican's 4th year anniversary in mid-September. We've kept in contact ever since when she expressed interest in moving to work in the country. That dream is now a reality for her and I foresee more oversea #Khmers joining her in the months and years ahead. - 📷: Marith Norodom - #aneakajun #khmershecan #imeetcoolpeopleeveryday
