What did you gift to someone who was swimming in money and possibly had anything he wanted? Or could easily get whatever he wanted?
“You bake a cake, of course!”, Anzu had told him. Easy to say for her, she was talented and whatever she tried, she managed wonderfully. He still remembered the amazing chocolate cake Anzu baked for Jou and when asked she said she tried it for the first time that evening. “Because it’s all about self-made things instead of things you can buy.”
Which sounded logical. Made sense. Kaiba was going to hate it, but Yugi’s conscience would feel better. He can’t just not gift him anything, even if it was lost on his rival. So one day before Kaiba’s birthday, he began his baking adventure. The TV was running, informing everyone about the upcoming birthday while Yugi tried his best to follow the instructions of the recipe in the cookbook next to him. His mother came over three times, just in time to fix a potential mistake (”Yugi that’s salt, not sugar!”) and eventually, the deed was done.
The cake wasn’t exactly the prettiest but it was tasty, he tried the dough beforehand and it was good enough. And because he didn’t want the entire school to know that he baked a cake for one Seto Kaiba, he instead texted him, asking if Kaiba wanted to come by to Yugi’s place tomorrow. “Or I come to yours, both is good,” he texted.
