When We Were Young - Fili & Kili
@brother-kili
Let it not be said that they were not still young, in both body and heart, when the ill fate of their uncle's quest ended the two Heirs of Durin's life journeys too soon. But there was a time, sadly not long ago, when they were younger still. They knew naught of the burden that weighed in their uncle's heart and they lived in the childish gaiety that comes with not knowing. Too young were they to understand what it meant to be without a home, but too soon were they to learn.
------
To Fili, the most important thing in the world was his little brother.There was little else he could count on, but he knew, no matter what happened, or to what new town their mother took them, his brother's bright, wide grin would always follow.
They traveled with their mother, who followed her brother to wherever he could find work. Often they overheard the two speak with great sorrow of the loss of their home, but to the boys this meant very little. To them, this life of wandering, of never settling and not belonging, was the adventure that all little boys dream of.
Their father had died some years back - long enough ago that they had hardly known him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Fili knew how hard the loss had been on his mother and he knew that he had to protect their little family - he was the eldest, after all. But, he was still too young to do any such thing, and he knew that they might not have survived if it hadn't been for Uncle.
In this particular town that they were now taking their chances, their Uncle found work with a smithy and their mother, of course, did what she could. The boys tried to help out, as well, but they were, after all, boys and could hardly stay out of mischief for long.
"Kili!" Fili half whispered, half yelled to his brother in that childish way of trying, and failing, not to be heard. "Kili!" he called again, poking his head out from behind the market basket where he hid, "Over here!" He beckoned his brother to him with a sure wave of his hand and a bright look in his eyes that promised he was up to something no-good.
That was, undoubtedly, the case. Would his mother have seen him now, she certainly would have rolled her eyes, let out a sigh, and given him a good 'tsk'ing, knowing he was up to something that his little mind surely thought to be the most clever, naughty, and, most importantly, fun ploy he had yet come up with.
