if you don't mind i was wondering why you feel that hussie is bad at endings? afaik the only story he's ended is problem sleuth, which i haven't read but i've heard it ended well... plus the EOAs and stuff have usually been very good.
Sorry I took a while to get to this! The first time I had the spare moments I was pretty tipsy, and while that would have made for an entertaining answer it wouldn’t have been a good one.
I remember liking the ending of Problem Sleuth, but the the entire thing, from climax to denouement, took for-fucking-ever. It was sprawling and badly paced, which really took away from the good parts of it.
So far act 6 has been the same thing but even moreso — it’s huge, it’s meandering, it’s slow when it should be fast and fast when it should be slow, and Hussie has started pulling a Neal Stephenson and kicking plot threads off of cliffs to resolve them rather than doing it properly. Sure, he’s been able to end acts really well — but those are inner parts of the story that bridge one section to the next. Actual ending-endings are different beasts entirely that require rather different handling, and he’s not very good at that.
And it’s a hard thing to do serially! I’ve done it twice and encountered the same problems. That’s why I’m glad he’s pulling back to get the rest done all at once, and hopefully giving it a good look-over and edit before releasing it to make sure it doesn’t suffer of the problems that have really plagued this section of the comic — the last couple of hundred of pages especially.
hi, just saw your answer in the calliope tag. calliope's done way more than that! for one thing, she introduced the alpha kids to each other, giving dirk and roxy the program that would let them communicate with jake and jane across time. she got jake to make liv tyler with jade, which is pretty important to the plot! and she sent jane her juju, setting off the trickster plot. plus she told roxy that her and the other kids should try going god tier.
Not really helping your case there. All of those things were either mere background details or plot devices of their own accord. All the trickster arc ever did was put the kids in position to ascend and apart from that, the arc didn’t really mesh well with the rest of the narrative.
Also, none of those give her any real ongoing relevance, especially since her biggest connection relates to Lord English’s rampage, but since English himself is also more of a background character than anything, it doesn’t really help her own position in any way.
For the most part she just hands out things for the arcs of other characters, while her own arc barely exists, and she hasn’t done anything notable in a long while.
Really, Calliope is all about wasted potential.

what is ILLBLEED i’ve seen it on my dash already recently and i’m curious/confused/a bit disturbed
ILLBLEED is a 2001 survival? horror? video game LP'd by the soothingly voiced and very thorough supergreatfriend a few years ago.
Eriko, a seventeen year old high school student, and her three friends are all given special promotional tickets to visit Michael Reynolds's new Horror Amusement Park, ILLBLEED, said to be the scariest thing ever just, ever. The first person to get through the entire park without dying (OF TERROR!!) will be awarded one million dollars
Eriko's friends all suck at not succumbing to SPINE TINGLING HORROR so she has to go and rescue each of them. Every level is set up like its own schlocky horror movie -- for example, the first level is called "The Homerun Of Death"
But who is the mysterious Michael Reynolds??? And how the hell does he pay for all this shit?? That's not really important, because there's a scary cake that talks so who cares.
