Kidlee for April! I look forward to reading your response ficlet :)
The sky was grey with heavy hanging rain clouds. They looked like fat ticks ready to pop. A few rain drops fell and hit the top of Harlee's head as she walked along her usual jogging route. Today she didn't feel much like jogging. It was too icky out. It sort of matched her mood, though, despite how cliche that was.
All that Harlee could think about lately was Kid. He'd left the convenience store almost two years ago and that had pretty much been the end of their communication. At first she had thought it would be good for both of them. Living down the hall from each other made it almost impossible to move on. Trying to get over someone that was always around wasn't any easy thing to do. It was totally working out for the better for her when he left. She immersed herself in all sorts of drugs, alcohol, and partying. And sex. Lots and lots of sex. It was great...until Harlee realize how very, very lonely she'd become. She missed Kid. She missed being held and comforted and loved. And most of all, she wanted those things from Kid. She sighed as she walked past the street she knew Kid's house was on. Usually she just walked ignored it but this time she couldn't. She wanted to walk down the street. She wanted to see his house and maybe catch a glimpse of him in the window watching a movie or cooking dinner or something.
Harlee wasn't sure what she expected, but it definitely wasn't Kid looking out the window at the exact moment she looked in. It was raining harder and Harlee figured she must have looked like a drowned rat but she dismissed the thought immediately. All she could concentrate in that moment was the fact that she was looking at Kid for the first time in almost two years and he was looking right back at her.
Without thinking, Harlee bolted up the front steps of Kid's house and pounded on the door. Before she could even finish her third knock, he had flung the door open, leaving her fist hanging in the air. She dropped her arm and blinked rain drops out of her eyes as she stared at him. He looked different. Older, really. But she looked older, too, and she knew that. It was just weird seeing him that way. In her mind's eye, he would always remain the just-a-little-too-skinny boy she'd fallen in love with when she was sixteen. Thin as a twig and tall as anything. But now he'd filled out. Not in a bad way, either. He had more muscle definition to him and his shoulders were broader and he just looked so great. Harlee opened her mouth to say something but before she could, Kid's now muscled arms wrapped around her and he was kissing her. Harlee was stunned for a moment. She certainly hadn't expected that to happen. She wasn't complaining, though. Not at all. This was what she had craved for so long now. Kid's warm embrace that made her feel protected and loved.
She pulled away from the kiss for a moment so she could take another look at him. "I miss you so much," she whispered, mostly to herself. Her lips touched his again, brushing against them gently. "Take me back again," she begged. "Please, Kid. I want to be with you. I need you." Her eyes were wide and pleading as she looked up at him. All she wanted was for them to be together again for as long as time would possibly allow. Kid leaned in and kissed her by way of answering her question. "Let's run off and get married. Me and you. Right now. Let's just...let's just go get married," she said. She didn't know where that crazy notion had come from but she wanted to do it. She wanted to get married and spend forever with him and she wanted him to spend forever with her, too. "Let's elope together."
"Okay," Kid said. "Okay, yeah."
Harlee held on to him as tightly as she could and kissed him then let go and grabbed his hand. "Come one, let's go!" She pulled him out into the rain with her and he laughed. He was soaking wet within minutes.
"I know a little place we can go to," Kid said, taking the lead. Harlee was more than glad to follow. "Maybe we should take a car, though?"
She shook her head. "That's no fun at all! I'd rather be totally drenched, I think. It'll be that much more interesting."
"You're still so weird," he said. He lifted up their joined hands and kissed the back of hers.
"I'll always be weird," she told him with a smile. People on the street gave them looks as they walked without an umbrella or any sort of protection from the rain. "You know, we've got to find people to be witnesses to our marriage. Want to grab one of these strangers looking at us like we're the biggest freaks on the planet?"
Kid paused for a beat. "No," he said. "I've got someone in mind."
