Wow, what a day this was.
It was a few weeks ago now, but I remember one thing vividly: being exhausted by the end. Definitely not a bad thing. Such a busy day meeting like minded people, going from talk to talk and finding inspiration in other humans. It was daunting and scary and confronting. It takes guts, stamina, a friendly personality and a tiny bit of luck to make it in this industry, along with many other qualities. It isn’t as simple as one would think, and this day made me realise this.
I discovered I should maybe try pursuing YA novel covers, and work my style up to be something tangible for the publishers to work with.
One thing I learnt is persistence is key. Keep trying, keep drawing, you’ve GOT to be in it to win it. It won’t happen overnight, but keep on their radar, shout it from the rooftops, and someone is bound to listen eventually.
Next thing I’ll do is collect postcards and mail them out to most of the publishers that attended this event. I needed to have done this sooner, but it’s never too late to start now.
It’s tough, having your passion critiqued. That’s your blood, sweat and tears on that page. But they aren’t as scary as one first thought.
